    Mara Pro Discussion

My MP arrived today and thought we could condense the relatively little amount of info on this shock into a singular location.

    Let's start with setup.

What are you running for PSI, rebound, HSC & LSC (please include your weight)?
Are there any out of the box adjustments you made that you'd recommend to new users?

    Riding weight: 195-200

155 PSI. HSC one click from closed, LSC 10 clicks from closed. Rebound 3 clicks from closed (Ibis Ripmo)

That leaves me with only 15-18 percent sag and it still feels pretty darn plush compared to any shock I have had, but blows through travel quicker than I would like (but is not having many fully harsh bottom-outs). I just got volume spacers in today from Manitou so hoping to be able to drop my PSI a little bit. Overall that set-up though has felt great and is a huge improvement from my X2.

Biggest nuance compared to every other shock I have had is: Every other shock I have wanted to airspring to be basically perfect for 90 percent of my rides, and then could use one or two clicks of compression dampening to fine tune it before it became harsh and felt like crap. That is not the case with the Mara Pro it seems, you can use the compression a little bit more without it feeling super lousy.

Just took the aircan off and it shipped with three spacers. For the people out there who work on these, putting it back together there was no hard stop screwing the aircan back on. I was careful to compress the shock taking it off as not to damage the threads as in the video. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas/ should i be concerned if its holding air?

    Thanks!

I purchased a Mara pro on sale but it’s 50mm and I need to remove the spacer to get 55mm stroke. Does anybody in this thread have the air can wrench manitou sells for $130? PM if so. Thx

Since it's bumped who is the go to for Mara rebuilds? Mine has picked up a wheeze this summer.

I sent mine to Manitou for some warranty work. They were relatively fast and it came back feeling great, excellent communication as well.

As far as the wrench... Not sure if this is helpful but when I asked if I really needed it they told me a large wrench or a knipex type tool would work just fine. Seems like a very expensive tool for low usage.

Removing just the air can won't let you remove the spacer. This process is more involved and would have to be followed by bleeding.
For air can service knipex wrench is more than sufficient.

It appears they are accessible just by removing the air can in this video. As far as I can tell this applies to both Mara and Mara pro from Manitou instructions but I could be wrong.

A travel reducing spacer is on the main shaft. You can definitely see it with air can off but it's an aluminum ring so in order to remove it from the shaft, you'd need to remove the shaft from the top cap, where your compression and rebound adjusters are which would lead to the oil loss.

Bumping travel on a Mara Pro is definitely not as simple as snipping the travel reducing spacer, it will require a damper bleed. As far as removing the air can, you should be able to do it by hand, although a strap wrench works better if you don't want to chew up your thumb on the piggy back when the air can comes loose. I've never tightened mine back with a strap wrench, always by hand. Slickoleum on the thread, never had any issues with air loss.
