Talked to a buddy this week whose business is going to take a big hit. They're contracted to use UPS and would have to pay a shit ton more money to use another carrier. So, they're stuck with having to cross the picket line and use with the scabs if there's a strike.

Unfortunately for UPS they are going to have to cough up - their business is good because they run the best business. If their service takes a hit they'll risk damaging that reputation. We use UPS because they do what they say they'll do and the service is the best. It costs more but it's worth it (and probably costs less when I factor in lack of damaged / missing shipments and time savings from not need to deal with that).

FedEx is a mess and using contracted employees for ground delivery always has been, and continues to be, their achilles heel.

Their tracking was real shit too, or has it gotten better?
A lot of it may have had to do with the covid shipping clusterfuck in general, but their tracking was worthless for ETAs etc.

Hands down UPS is the best. I've known every driver the past 15 years by first name. There have been only 3. Low attrition..

Most sources doubt it will come to a strike. I guess time will tell. I don’t see why management fights it so hard. Give them what they want, pass all the costs on to the consumers, drop a bunch of market share, fire a bunch of the help. Rinse repeat.

I don't see them getting air conditioning in the trucks, trucks where the door is open 50% of the time or more. <Dad hat.> "are you trying to air condition the whole neighborhood???"<Dad hat./>

They have to at least make loud noises and rattle sabers to appease the i-bankers and co that only care about EPS and don't give a shit about people.

I was riding with a co-worker a few years back, hot morning. I ask him, windows or AC. His reply, I like a little of both. Mind blown.

If they had AC, then they would not have the doors open 50% (or in summer it probably is more like 95% of the time with at least 1 or many times both doors are open)... They are also talking about only the new trucks put into service so maybe a new design for the truck also, not retro fitting the old vehicles from some of the comments on the UPS offer to the Union. Union probably is pushing for retro fitting and getting the older vehicles done and not taking years to get the fleet going with AC.

How about instead of heated seats, some kind of cooled seat?

    Works wonders in my vehicle.

Maybe clear vinyl covers for the doors, like a golf cart. Split down the center, they could still jump in and out, but it would hold the AC inside while sitting in traffic.

Especially since I have a 4 cylinder, I have no problem with windows down and ac on. Not sure it makes much difference. It's kinda weak anyway. At least at first. Also, need the back windows down when the dog is in the car. Kept my front windows up running an errand today, though. Too fucking hot.
FYI, since 2008 model year, highway mileage rating is 65mph possibly with the ac on.

" 12:52 PM EDT, 07/25/2023 (MT Newswires) -- United Parcel Service (UPS) said Tuesday it reached a tentative workers' agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Under the national master agreement, current full and part-time UPS Teamsters will receive $2.75 more per hour this year, and $7.50 more per hour during the contract length, the Teamsters said on its website.
The new part-time workers at the company will start at $21 per hour and move to $23 per hour while UPS will also create 7,500 new full-time Teamsters roles and fill 22,500 open positions, the union said.
UPS Teamster locals in the US and Puerto Rico will meet on Monday to review and recommend the tentative agreement. The member voting will start on Aug. 3 and conclude by Aug. 22, the union added.
"Together we reached a win-win-win agreement on the issues that are important to Teamsters leadership, our employees and to UPS and our customers," UPS Chief Executive Officer Carol Tome said in a statement "This agreement continues to reward UPS's full- and part-time employees with industry-leading pay and benefits while retaining the flexibility we need to stay competitive, serve our customers and keep our business strong.
The union represents about 330,000 UPS employees in the US.

they’ll sit in their forklift watching someone struggle and then file a grievance on the person that goes to help them

Right to work bullshit has been the biggest kick in the nuts to the middle class since we built a middle class. I'd like to see all industries fully unionized. The 1% needs to totally be financially taxtrated down to the levels of the 1970s again..

Don’t remember who said it, and it was certainly put more eloquently than I’m about to put it but the gist of it was:

The fact that so many non-union workers see the pay/benefits of union workers and react disparagingly instead of thinking ‘I want that too’ is one of the biggest wins of the ownership class in America.

So an agreement, that still needs to have a vote and affirmation by the collective employees in the union. But hopefully it was enough to get them to vote yes.
