vrBO better thank air bnb in our experience. Ubers are super cheap. Fish and all pork products and cheese are amazing. Beef oddly not great this trip- not sure why. Lisbon is overrun with Americans right now- see the sights and gtfo of town- don’t need to go far for it to be cool again. We are between Magoito beach and Sintra- view of the castle out the front door, the ocean in the back. Equivalent in east Hampton or Nantucket would be 10 grand a week- this is 1/5 that

agree with the guidance to go north if you venture out of lisbon. reservations for dinner. driving is easy outside the cities.

    loafers tend to be breathable/quick-dry

Looking for a new pair actually. Related: if you go north you’ll need a sweater (yellow, cable knit) at night-

Euro beef is not all that good according to thousands of female college semester abroad students. Thinking a few days in Lisbon , a day (possibly overnight) and heading north. Finish the trip in Porto before I fly out. The thought of a fish/chip shack sighting with pasty Brits to the south with a tour bus parked out front is enough to make me go oppo.

Very generally speaking this is probably true-ish.

But Tuscan Chianina would like a word...

one week sigtseeing for the north is nice. Portugese cuisin is basic.
Soup a dia is always vegetable soup.
Octopus salad!!! And catch of the day!
The rest well it is portugal.
Pastel the nata always with cinnamon.

I would suggest 2 days lissabon.
1 day sintra. Good snackbar in sintra
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/RkwRTi21RtSfPYri8

No car needed all by public transport.

In sintra: the palace, outside is amazing. The standing in line for the rooms is not worth it.
    Regaleria is amazing.
The mauren castle is not so cool only 300years old. The garden thing was nice. With the farn trees.
You go with tuktuk from one sight to another. 15-20 bucks a ride.

    Rent a car.
    One night in ericera

    Nice seafood restaurant on the
    way

    Do peniche on the way???

    One night in porto.

    Enjoy

a dish I really liked was the Bacalao

you might question eating dryed salted & rehydrated cod fish instead of fresh fish but it was really good

    same with the tinned fish

you can take a boat tour up & down the Douro river valley which is worth doing, the workers have to be in some serious good shape to walk up and down those hills

you would have to drive there so leave lots of time to get there

Hey fatnslow I served my Mormon mission in Lisbon and spent two years living there and I also have a degree in Portuguese linguistics. Happy to help you plan out an itinerary, DM me.

    in general -

    two days in Lisbon proper
two days in Sintra (maybe 3)
one day in Estoril/Cascais (or on the other side of the Tejo) - beach days!!
    one day floating/flex

some 100% things not to be missed:

    - go to a fado club. plan on being there until 2 or 3 am. the ones around castelo de st. Jorge/baixa chiado are the best. fado is an incredible musical tradition that is uniquely Portuguese and embodies the national emotion - saudade - unlike anything else. to understand fado is to understand Portuguese culture.
    - bacalhau (dried salted cod from the north atlantic) is the national dish, but there are a million ways to prepare it - bacalhau à bras is my favorite, ymmv
    - people who think the food is basic or plain are, honestly, ignorant and have shitty taste. you just gotta know what to order. conservas (tinned fish) are INCREDIBLE in Portugal. also I would absolutely kill to have fresh grilled sardines right now.
    - amateur bullfighting (forcado) in vila Franca de xira, if it's happening when you're there, is a hoot. they don't kill the bull, they basically just wrestle it. it's hilarious.
    - vinho verde, young Portuguese wine, is fantastic and cheap and very drinkable, especially with grilled sardines and conservas.

How many converts did you recruit? Conversely, how many hot portugeuse milfs recruited you?

the locals in an Air BnB suggested 2 apps to down load for getting around I am pretty sure it was Waze & Moovit

I used Waze in the car to get up to the Douro, I just followed the voice commands and i think I would still be lost in portugal without it

Moovit would find obscure trails in town and even tell you how many steps

The locals didnt have phone plans they just bought a 15$ chip which gave them a whole bunch of air time and they bought another one when that was up

Just realized that when you'll be there in late September is harvest season in the Douro. If you stay at some of the quintas, you can even take part in the grape stomping.

Beats hanging out in Gibraltar with adenoidal typists from Birmingham with flabby white legs and diarrhoea trying to pick up hairy bandy-legged wop waiters called Manuel and once a week there's an excursion to the local Roman Ruins to buy cherryade and melted ice cream and bleeding Watney's Red Barrel and one evening you visit the so called typical restaurant with local colour and atmosphere and you sit next to a party from Rhyl who keep singing 'Torremolinos, torremolinos' and complaining about the food - 'It's so greasy here, isn't it?' - and you get cornered by some drunken greengrocer from Luton with an Instamatic camera and Dr. Scholl sandals and last Tuesday's Daily Express and he drones on and on and on about how Mr. Smith should be running this country and how many languages Enoch Powell can speak and then he throws up over the Cuba Libres.

Maybe I should just head straight to Liverpool instead for some mashed peas and boiled beef ? I'll definitely pass on the grape stomping, that type of tourist pandering make me vomit in my mouth.

Can you recommend any particular brand of Portuguese nutmeg ? I know heroin has been decriminalized but that seems so 2015.

Go to Sagres (pronounced sagresh). It was 30 years ago when I was there last, but it's amazing. Lots of.other great beta been brought up. There used to be a place in Porto called the Museum of Port that was fantastic. You could buy glasses of 10, 20, 30yr and older vintage ports. All with an amazing deck and a killer view of the Douro, but I'm afraid it must be closed as I can't find reference to it on the Google.
