I loved all things shark when I was a kid growing up on the beach. Apex predators are badass.

    bycatch

unfortunate too, because they're long-lived with low fecundity, and may be an important cog in the big transmission

Ah yeah, I remember seeing the segment on those on Planet Earth or Sharkweek a while back. Cool sharks, they look like mini Great Whites.

Yeah, just did a quick wiki read. That's too bad they're often bycatch and intentionally killed by some fisherman as a nuisance. Looks like the Japanese have their own harmful harvesting habits as well.

yea I was hesitant to post the photo. What doesn't come across in the photo is how bummed out I was with the whole situation. Thankfully only one in 19 years.

From a completely uninformed layperson’s view, that’s an incredibly good bycatch rate. Good on ya.

Fishermen, like hunters, don’t want a shitty ecosystem to do business in. I’d expect your operation is no different, and the less unintended harvest the better.

Jeremy Wade had an Alaska episode that shared some good info about these. Super interesting

Is Steven Kang the less successful cousin of Stephen King?

"fecundity" is a word that should be used more here in the PR. That and "fructuous."

Jaws did a lot of that. I think he/she blew up in every iteration of the franchise.

So true. Some of the early years with Harold Ramis were my favorites as a kid.
