I likely don't have the refined palate others have, but bulls and cows both taste good to me. In MT we typically have cold weather for rifle season and I am careful with how the quarters, backstraps, tenderloins and rib meat are handled. Last years 6x6 tasted as good as any cow elk I have eaten.

Srsly, glad you can post after something like that Phall! Hope you didn't get hurt?

I'm like, "How? Oh yeah, he's a waterfowler."

You know you now have to hunt with a nice side-by, or at least a 28" OU so this never happens again, right? They're lighter anyway.
Yep, all good, could have been worse. Sad about my late stepfathers gun but hoping to find a replacement barrel.

Archery elk was a dud this year, upland hunting has been fantastic however. Strong bird numbers and perfect weather for the setters.

Got my first elk Saturday, just got home after packing for two days, not many issues with getting the meat cold quick at 12000'.
After many years of faithful service my car camping tent finally died, graupel snow and 45mph winds collapsed it while I was out all day Saturday, spent the last two nights in my Subaru, including a balmy 4 degrees this morning. Click image for larger version.

Plenty of work left in the processing. And the eating, so excited.

Sunrise on my last day chasing elk with the muzzy. Hope to get out on the front here in utah but I think it’s officially just duck season.
Had multiple cows inside 150, saw a 150” Mulie buck, but no spikes wanted to play.

I've shot huge bulls, small 5x5's, and cows of every variety, but if I could design the perfect taker, I'd love to be able to shoot a spike.

I also love veal which I cannot get, but I can run studs year round on a coal roller without fear of a $50 ticket. #tradeoffs

Don't know till you go. Packed in our heavy packs and did 35+ miles on foot to find: Very little elk sign (a couple old bull tracks), TONS of moose sign....resident big boy looks like he is king of the canyon, many many cat tracks, and about 70,000,000 downed trees from years of wind events and no fire. Old well worn game trails covered in endless downed trees (see: No elk). Even the elk got sick of the tinker toys. Oh well.

Lots of miles and no elk seem to have been a common experience this fall.

Had a chance in a new zone today on the buck that likely dropped this antler. He was about 200 yards but body was obscured but a xmas tree . Then he dropped into a depression and I couldn't get on him. ... I'll be dreaming of the view through my scope today

Deer camp. Passed on some easy does, then missed a buck at 300 with a 40 mph crosswind. Probably not the most ethical shot I ever took, ah well.

Damn that looks like so much fun! Want to host a Canadian!?

Goty 2nd supplemental doe yesterday. First time sitting in a stand with a rifle. Always spot and stalk.
    335 yard and dropped.
Fire at my back in the stove.
Just finishing packing the meat then on to cutting up the wobbly bits for dehydrated dog treats.

I love the desert, high desert, sage brush steppe, whatever you call it. And going after chukars makes it all that better.

Caught a few glimpses of this buck from my deer stand the past few weeks but he never presented me with a shot until this morning. Thirty yards with the slug gun. Thanks buddy, I'm grateful to have some meat for the freezer.
