Is your room dark enough? I've been waking up early lately because it starts getting light so early coupled with birds starting to sing. I can almost always get back to sleep, but still annoying. Blackout shades and some kind of white noise would probably help.
Body is just telling you that there’ll be plenty of time to sleep when you’re dead, which is now much closer than one would like to admit.
I’ve always been an early waker, but a late riser when work or play don’t demand it. Brain flashes on, assesses the situation, then back to dreamland. Or maybe I just never left.
Alcohol in the evening is famous for causing middle of the night waking.
Old people sleep less because things start to hurt when you lie in bed too long. And the piss thing of course.

When I started waking up 2-3:30 (and not due to needing a piss break) my doc said I may have sleep apnea, and sent me to a specialist.
They sent me home with this monitoring contraption with like eight sticky leads for chest, a pulse-ox monitor for my finger and about 50’ of wire connecting everything.
I spent the night waking up tangled in the wires and probes - got about 40 min of sleep. Worst fucking sleep I can remember. Dr said it indicated apnea. I said it indicated a piss-poor testing protocol & Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, and no fucking way he could legitimately draw this conclusion under the circumstances.
So now I go to bed about 9:30 after getting baked on my home grown indica (purple panty dropper) wake up about 2-3AM, throw a piss, read a bit, then fall back asleep until 0500-0530. Works for me. But my schedule is likely more flexible than many of you with full time jobs and kids.
I also take 400mg magnesium glycinate - helps with D3 absorption I’m told. Doesn’t impact my sleep at all. YRMV.
