Hey tech genius, wtf is going on here?

My wife took a picture of our son yesterday. If you zoom in on his ear, there's a fucking dude there. Where does this come from?

Looks like the phone was in portrait mode, which blurs out the background, usually with decent success. But that mode isn’t perfect. In this case, it failed to totally blur out the space between your son’s ear and noggin’, similar to the crappy effect of a blurred out background on a zoom call- when you move, the background becomes visible. Was she at a park or other outdoor area with other folks in the background? Just a hunch.

Either that or t-shirt sasquatch made an appearance.

There's someone living in your kid's head. Obviously.

Either when the photo was taken there was a kid in the background and she captured the photo and said kid was right where you see him looking like he was perched on your kid's ear. Or this is some new iphone camera photo filter that cameras can do now. Like putting cat ears or whiskers on every head in a shot, something like that...

You can use a blur background to help, or use Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop or similar to edit the photo.

I think it was in portrait mode. The background is mountains. Just seems like a rather strange artifact to insert. Cause it is clearly a dude that is nowhere in the photo.

Did you activate pervo Mode? It inserts a weird middle aged man into all pics with kids [emoji6]

When digital cameras first came out they were pre loaded with a database of thousands of stock photos. These photos were used to help render the photos you take when shooting in auto mode. (it would automatically adjust things like light levels, areas of focus, I assume f stops, etc, based on the 'standard' stock photos)

I wonder if modern cameras still work this way, and this is somehow an affect of that?

It's an Apple and people love them and say they just work. And that they have the greatest cameras that put random little kids in pictures I guess.

literally looks like a baseball batter in the box

agreed that it doesn't really look to be someone in the background, given the background is literally a mountain

    that's super weird

yeah, wondering if this is some kind of weirdo image processing artifact. Like, maybe there's an algorithm that blurs out the background and thought something looked like a guy coming out of your son's ear, so tried to bring that into focus. Now I really want to know, can you ask Apple or some photog forum and tell us what you find out?

If It's in portrait mode you can change the lighting effect after the fact, right? Does that do anything to the weird little person?

I agree it's probably a weird AI glitch in the software. They are really ramping up the processing aspect of it, trying to make sure humans and faces are in focus, etc. Probably just fooled it into thinking it'a a person somehow.

Maybe you won’t be so dismissive the next time your kid tells you he has a secret friend that only talks to him

They were talking about this on my Astrophysics podcasts... that there's now sophisticated "filter" AI being applied to pictures that incorporates and weaves in a database of photographs to result in what is supposed to be the best possible picture. The side-effect is that aspects of your final photo may include detail that was not in the original. Wild times.

That’s a good one! The HDR mode takes multiple photos to even out exposure so I bet that’s what happened and the fast movement messed with it. Looks super trippy.

No idea - maybe an artifact from a prior photo?

I took this photo (shot as a still, not a video) about 12 years ago at a kids ski race with whatever iPhone was in vogue then
