    Talking Pow Missiles

It's Spring, so let's talk pow skis!!

I didnt wan't to poach anybody else's thread, but I'm looking for a pow missile, also. Right now my 110+ fleet is Enforcer (110) 185, Friend (117) 183 and La Machine Max (126) 186.

I actually really like the E110 as a pow ski. Put it into the fall line and it lets you get a bit below the surface without feeling like it's diving. Complaints: It has a kinda short radius and doesn't quite glide like I'd like. It can be a bit sluggish in tight spaces in pow.

The Friend is crazy maneuverable, good in trees and deep untracked but feels like it folds up through really fast chop (damn near went out the front on it yesterday at high speed).

The La Machine Max is its own beast. Floats any depth of pow. I bought it as a heli/cat/motorized back country ski. Loads of surfy fun, but no bueno when things get consolidated and bumped up at the resort.

I want a ski that glides fast. This will be a resort ski, so it has to do chop well. Big radius, but I want to be able to shut it down and pivot through rocks/trees. I might CAST it for occasional touring in pow.

I think I want a Ren or Hoji. I think I'm leaning Hoji. I know they aren't heavy, but they're supposed to be stiff enough to pound soft chop. I've seen them go fast and make giant turns in pow. My buddy crushes on the 191, but he's a lot bigger than I am (6'2 200 to my 6' 155). I'd like to ride his, but alas Pivot mounted to a longer BSL.

Thoughts? I think a reverse ski is what I'm after. Long nose rocker. Can the Hoji be a pow missile? 184 or 191 for 6' 155lbs. I'm kinda leaning 191. Point it and pin it.

Or do I need something heavier? I'm kinda sad Nordica is killing the E115. I'd like to try that ski, too.

On my radar. Heavy. Those would probably replace the Friend and E110.

I think you're on to something/looking at the right shapes. Reverse camber w/ flat tail and large sidecut radius goes zoom zoom. Ren, og bodacious, and now the fl113.

The Corvus does enough things well. You'd probably like it.

    Pow Missiles

OG 4frnt Renegades, which have a little more magic in untracked or Moment Chipotle Banana which is better in chop and in variable / firmer conditions.

Hojis are fun too but less of a missile than those skis IMO. I’ve only been on the older, 187 heavier version

Hey man! Just a quick thought here.

I'd say the FL113 is more for carpet bombing than strategic missile deployment. For causing maximum devastation. Meaning they are WAY more directional and chargy than a Friend or E110. The FL113 is for getting from top to bottom in the fastest and most direct way possible (ie not skiing moguls, but airing 6 moguls at a time).

If you are looking to ski the mountain, instead of airing and drifting it, I'd suggest looking at the FR110 from the range, which is both more normal of a weight (~2400g) and a more slashy/nimble/poppy ski than the FL113, and going to be a missile in chopped and bumped snow compared to modern Hojis at <2000g for example.

Also, if you like in Truckee, ski fast in cut up snow, and these are inbounds skis, I'd say look at >2300g weight... It's just basic newtonian physics. F=MA. Heavier skis get pushed around less by the snow and track through it better than lighter skis.

    Hope this helps!

I have the Corvus and found I really had to manage its tips in fresh (maritime) pow, not enough tip rocker to plane up without being in the backseat imo

I got the 191 Renegades this season to fix that and they’ve been incredible, surfy and enough backbone to carry lots of speed even when it’s fairly tracked out, as long you stay active and balanced on the ski. I’m 5’11 and 155 and for a pow ski I’ve loved the 191 length, took them through tight trees at Red and never found the length to be too much, all that tail rocker makes them really intuitive in tight terrain

Man, all of your skis are on my radar. I'd love to ski them. I'm a total ski whore, so I'm sure at least one of your shapes will end up on my feet. I'm watching the FR110, for sure. Right now I have a Hotshot and E110 (the E110 will probably move along) in that space. I do love the heavier, damp skis for Tahoe skiing. I'm not a super directional skier with the exception of pow days where I rarely ride switch.

My ski style can be Jekyl and Hyde. Some days I smear and pop off of everything. Yesterday I straight lined chop and shallow pow. It's all fun.

    Thanks for chiming in.

I skied a deep day with a buddy a couple weeks back and he was flying on his Hoji's. He's a different kind of skier though. He didn't pay for skis for quite a few years.

Go find a Head A-Star. I casually looked for one for a couple of years, grabbed a cheap pair earlier this year, and they were great... so much so that I snapped up another minty pair.

Search here for reviews. Some love them, others not.

Crush crud and still pivots sounds like a bg to me. Choose size based on your size.

The A-Star is a 4frnt EHP clone... which is very much a good thing! Heavy, way tapered, long low rocker, subtle reverse camber (not as dramatic as current ren/hoji).
One other current ski to throw in the mix... SGN Togga. Also an EHP clone, just bigger. I've got the 194, weighs 2500 ish. https://sgn-skis.myshopify.com/products/togga... Edit: Just noticed the Togga got waaay lighter somewhere along the way (now <2000 gr in 194) so disregard the based on my weight bias.
And yes, the HL FR110 would also appear to fit the bill quite well.
Weight is very much your friend here. Presumably thats the downside with La Machine Max is that its so dang light.
I'd shy from the current Ren if you're looking for something to complement the Machine. It's pretty light for its size, and I found its softish tips combined with big tip splay = not great a banging through cut-up resort pow... vs something heavier, stiffer and lower slung (ie, Togga above). Old school Rens are a different animal.
Assuming youre keeping the Machines, then get something different enough - which means much heavier.

Pow missiles that eat chop, ON3P 1.5 flex Super Goat, 196 Arne Bodacious, HL FL113, HL 185 FL120, little narrower is the Dynastar Mpro108, it’s actually 110.
192 or 196 4Flex Protest. If you can find them, the Praxis press 191 Lhasa Fat in a stiff flex heavy core build. They are unicorns but are absolute missles, pivot with ease and destroy chop.

IDK why no one has said Moment Wildcat yet. Great pow ski, long radius, progressive mount, and amazing in cut up seconds and even day-after chunder.

I could also recommend a Praxis Quixote, similar dimensions and idea but a different feel. Easy to pivot when you stand on it, hits the gas pedal when you lean into the fall line

Thanks to everybody for their input. It sounds like I have a few skis to sort through and try out. I think it sounds like I'm looking for a heavy, full reverse ski. I love the idea of HL skis and I have a bunch of skis that will pivot and work tight spaces. I might go full missile. We'll see.

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues
