    Alpinist question from a Jong

can you help a jong out - looking at alpinists and wondering if I understand the differences correctly

the 10 has a "DIN" range of 4 to 10
    the 12 has a range of 6 to 12

I'm usually at 8 - so figure either could work

found a killer deal on the 12 - practically free compared to fancier options

but if I understand it correctly the 8, 10, and 12 u-springs are different - soft, medium, and hard - and that the hard spring that comes on the 12 is felt to be an "11" whereas the spring on the 10 is a "9"

I know you can swap these springs for pretty cheap - does it make sense to snag the 12's off this deal and source a medium spring?

or am I out to lunch on this

Or does changing the uspring in the 12 from hard to medium make the binding essentially the same as the 10?

Vertical release is fixed by the u spring, lateral is adjustable. So you could get a 12 and a lower release u spring and adjust the lateral to be around 8 and you'd have appropriate release settings. Skimoco sells different u springs.

That being said usually the lower release bindings are cheapest, and can be had for ~$200 from euro sites occasionally. If it's still less than that to get a 12+new u spring go for it.

I always buy the higher release value option and tune it down, knowing the resale value will stay higher for very aggressive former pro TGR skiers.

Thank you for this clarification - very helpful!

Am I crazy to think that this kind of info should be easy to figure out via the products webpage?

Someone else can confirm (or correct me if Im wrong) but Ive also read that you get less consistent release when youre at the max of the DIN range.

I have also heard that ^^ at least on alpine bindings

but I have also heard release on the Tech binding is different, so you can run a tech binding at its max and it will release properly ??
