Question for the Intelligencia: since there's been a painfully obvious effort NOT to refer to the recent shot down objects as "balloons", how are they maintaining their buoyancy? Presumably, since they are referred to as having no active propulsion, they aren't massive solar powered drones (pretty sure that's not even possible any way), so how to they remain suspended? Seems the journos have been missing the obvious question in recent briefings.
I have a feeling they're all lighter-than-air aircraft of some sort: balloons, dirigibles, blimps.
...DeLoreans...
Dirigible is an underutilized word.
I still call it The Jake.

'The unidentified flying object shot down in Canadian airspace on Saturday appeared to be a “small, metallic balloon with a tethered payload below it,” according to a Pentagon memo sent to lawmakers on Monday and obtained by CNN.'
Honestly it would be pretty funny to send a balloon over designed to look like the Death Star.
“The PRC surveillance Ballon” according to the pentagon.
Anyone have a better idea?
Let’s give it a go.
I was kinda hoping it would turn out to be the Deltoid Pumpkin Seed guys doing some guerilla product development:

BTW, the John McPhee book on this (like pretty much all John McPhee books) is great.

Thanks, I had just looked through a list of his books and hadn't seen that one for some reason.
watch out for snakes
The latest (4th) one was octagon shaped at 20k feet. Without more info, that sounds like someone flying their octocopter to see how high it goes. My money's on none of these were military craft. All were research/science and we're witnessing a DC beltway freakout. Could balloons be used for military purposes - definitely and have been for centuries.
I bet this goes to 20k if you remove the snowboarder
