    RIP

Well, today I went to an ultra-top-secret location (which no-one could possibly guess at), caught a couple cutties, and broke off two fish; one due to an overzealous hookset leading to a failed blood knot, and the other just plain broke after about ten seconds of play. Durned fishes stole both of my purple chubbies (and droppers)!!

What an awesome few days. Been a while since I've had salmon fly fishing that good.

Well Swimmy, upon seeing your latest, it comes to mind that my latest catch would make a light snack for such a beast. Well played sir, and scenery pic as well.

I went down to the super-secret hot spot and caught a couple using size ten renegades early on in the day, but later on though, I only got a couple bites because i wasn't using what they were eating. What they really wanted for dinner was, apparently, Panther Martin spinners, because there was I guy I met there who caught one after another just pitching and reeling in a Panther Martin. He caught six fish while I was talking to him (he said he'd caught eight before I got there); he let me fish right where he'd done best, I pitched wooly buggers, and zonkers, and drifted a chubby chernoble. I had one on briefly, and got a rise on another, but he just kept reeling them in.

It turns out that he's part of the film crew taping "Freddy and Juan's Mine Rescue" for The Discovery Channel, and Freddy Dodge had been down there fishing earlier on (I saw him but didn't recognize him).

It was a good day on the river, I caught fish!

This is the biggest of the three I caught on Friday. While the fishing is good at the super secret spot, and it has been good practice in mending and parachute casting, I kinda want to find a less urban super secret spot where hotel guests are not watching me fish from their balconies, and where there is not a line up of fishermen wanting to get in the best spot.

Rasputin, I call those fish crowd pleasers.

One of my best buddies from Georgia booked a last minute Father's Day trip with his son. We got us a VRBO on the river. The view was sick.

His son has never fished before so first day was learning the basics. Bite was also pretty slow for us.

Day 2 bite was much better and we started getting into a few fish.

My buddy capped off the trip with his personal best trout. Great fish.

Fishing is the best. More big bugs on deck...

Did the kid "catch the bug"? I expect seeing a big brown like that might be contagious. Great pics Swimmy!

That kid is a stud. I don't know of many 15 year olds that could stay focused that long on fishing...especially how we like to get after it. It was also fun watching his progression from never touching a fly rod to landing his first wild trout.

One other interesting think about the kid...he is a guru at preparing and cooking meat. One night he cooked a tomahawk steak and a couple of filets, one night he cooked burgers for 15 of us. Both were his projects from start to finish. He can work a grill and/or big green egg to perfection. I've never seen anything like it.

Puled my Euro rod out of the sock this morning and the fighting butt (and bottom of the real seat) was loose. I was able to pull it right off.

That sucks but epoxy it back on. Just make sure not to get epoxy in the reel foot hood and that the hood is aligned with the butt section alignment dot.
    Harvest the ride.

Recently I made the acquaintance of a fly shop manager while shopping for groceries. I told him of my interest in streamer fishing, my repulsion for the pursuit of affluence, and my good fortune in my fishing trip to my favorite cutthroat stream. He was impressed by my honesty in revealing that I'd caught good sized fish and where, and he suggested that I stop by the shop. I told him that I'd amassed a couple months worth of flies (given my talent for losing them) and they would have to do, as I was quite out of money. He told me I should stop by the shop. He told me how he'd been tying flies for 30 plus years, and had developed a huge surplus, so I should stop by the shop.

I have this thing about the number three, and when someone says something to me three times, I get pretty interested, as if my indicator had submerged quickly into slow moving waters. So I stopped by the shop today, and had a fun conversation about fishing and life. He asked me for my number and said he'd take me fishing after his wife recovered from knee surgery, as he was quite busy maintaining her super-duper flower garden. I told him I could help out if he'd like, as being pre-retired, I had a lot of time at my disposal. He said he'd likely give me a call. He sent me home with a spool of super strong leader, and a box containing vast treasures:

I tried a couple of the new streamers this afternoon, lost one of my Sparkle Minnows (but not before a couple bites by an over ambitious small fish), and got driven off the river by swarms of mosquitos. Sigh. The Clark Fork has dropped, and cleared up considerably in the past few days, which is heartening.
