I’ve been tuning skis for a long time, using a variety of methods, but find the Orb as simple and effective as I’ve tried for maintaining a 1 degree base and 2 degree sidewall bevel on multiple pairs of skis.

    https://www.tools4boards.com/orb-8-w...edger-kit.html

It’s a full three stage process to get each pair set up and then again at the start of the season, otherwise it’s just an every few days of skiing pass with the Diamond stone puck to keep the edges and bevels perfect.

I’ve never tried beyond a 1 degree base bevel, and can’t imagine a use case beyond trying to make some insanely stiff race ski manageable by mere mortals.

Well, if they stop making them the files at Ace are the same as the ski files you buy

I may have tuned a ski or 3 in my day. I'm not jumping in about bevels and such as that's all personal preference and I could blow up the internet with umm tuning knowledge that some kitchen tuner would immediately "akshually" me with.

But that "adjustable" plastic guide and file set up is garbage. Get real metal guides and clamps. The files you're getting at Ace and most other hardware stores are not the same as ski files. Hell even good ski files are getting hard to find because the hard chroming process offends the Greta Thunbergs of the world.

    Base Bevels Beyond 1 Degree

I found the exact same file at ACE that I bought from Tognar 20 years ago.

The multi tuner is fine for touch ups but no substitute for a metal guide

Things are probably different in the USA? I've never seen a good file at a chain/regular hardware store.

It is all personal preference. Alot Trail and error.
File handling takes sometime. Specially if you are not a craftsman.
It is easy just follow the video. Take a racecarver and start. Everytime you will get better and know what you like.

You need a waxbench and proper clamps. And threr dif. baselbevel, two dif. side bevel, two files (short&long), a diamond stone (fine)/gummistone/
    sidewall planer

    Basebevel 05/1/1.5
    Sidebevel 88/89
    Files extra hard

This is the minimum to start tuning.
And there is lots of other stuff nice to have.
Lets get me straight, you are not reacing.... thats a good start

!!!!!And you need to watch all youtube videos you can find!!!!!

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a2MGvdHWZ2s

This is the best video in my opinion.

    I am not an expert.
But i like tuning skis to my needs and ridingstyle.

It was the same brand and model of file. I’m sure you’re an awesome skier, better than me but don’t call me a liar.

no. I’m not calling you a liar. There are just not quality files in a hardware store. Maybe for my chainsaw bar, but not for my skis. That’s like dropping off chef knives to be sharpened by the hardware store and claiming there’s nothing better.

and in fact I suck. I’m still working on pizza to French fry transition. But I watch a lot of videos and slept at a holiday inn last year.

Maybe the hardware stores in VT sucks. My local ACE has an entire aisle of machinist tools

As OG said, ACE in Truckee has proper ski files. Whole tuning section. So your overly broad generalization is incorrect.

I'm sure as fuck not wasting time trying to refine a 1/2 degree bevel.

Maaaaybe if I lived where the surface is slicker than goose shit, I'd sharpen up. But I don't, so I won't.

And your response doesn't exactly address my comment that you quoted.
Your soft gummi ain't doin' dick on that edge except shining off the rust.
Maybe you can’t feel it either due to technique/terrain/conditions, but a few swipes of a soft gummi definitely has a noticeable effect. I’ve taken to only detuning one set of edges on my groomer skis so I can use full sharp when things are hard first thing in the morning and late afternoon, then switch to detuned when it softens up. (Yes, I go overboard on some things….) I can absolutely feel a difference when switching.

Check out the video twat posted and what the tech is doing to detune. It’s just a few progressively longer swipes at tip and tail.

If you can’t feel a difference, or don’t care, great.

I have never seen them midget files in any hardware store so they would look like a specialty item to me

in any case I just use a standard/ longer/ way more manly file with twice as many teeth in a holder I picked up yars ago which has 2 slots 90 & 88 (sez made in Chermany) and so just chose the 90

And I have never been to truckee

This thread is fun. Every now and then I worry we’re turning into epic ski, but the general callouts and shit slinging in this thread put my fears at ease….

What kinda edge tools do you guy use? There was one posted upthread that looked interesting… I have one of those plastic things with a confusing number of slots to put files/diamond stones in and I hate it…

There’s a tuning thread somewhere that has info.
But aluminum angles with a bastard file and pony clamp is the usual way.
Then pony clamp a coarse diamond to finish. Unless you’re anally racing.

Base bevel is more difficult. And shouldn’t be touched unless you grind the base down. I just use a coarse diamond to knock down any burrs. I do have a base file holder but rarely use it.

Check slideright. Great site and has mag discounts

PS. Don’t use a file without taking out the burrs first

Standard aluminum side bevel file guides in 88* and 89* from Swix/Toko/Racewax etc.
"The Beast" 1deg base bevel guide
    spring clamp
bastard and a nice mill file
extra credit- a series of diamond stones from coarse to fine

    keep it simple MFer
