Finally laid hands on the transalp tours. In size 30 they are a whopping 1666 grams with stock insoles so a good 150 g more than my Mtn Explores in 29. Not sure if I should really care about that difference. The walk mode is great, honestly close to my backlands. The flex feels fine, definitely more progressive than the Explore, maybe softer at room temp.
I skied the Transalps mostly this season. They aren’t the lightest. They weighed the same as my Atomic Hawx XTD Ultra (gen 1) with the earlier stock liner, not mimic. I think they are great boots, besides the fact that the heel was too deep for my foot. I’m hoping the Backland 120 XTD will be a better fit. If not, I’ll stick with the Transalps.
After 3 big days on the Fischer Transalp Tour boots and have to say they are my favorite touring boots EVER.
Fit is perfect for my medium feet. Snug but not tight. May need a slight punch for pinky toes but so far doing great.
They ski better than any boot I've owned. Flex is very supple and supportive. I don't get heel lift if the instep buckle is tight enough. I do think some micro-adjustment there would help dial in the tightness, however. I had to play around with buckle position and shims for volume reduction. I'm going with a shim on the right foot and no shim left to accomodate different foot shape.
Walking uphill is great. Very little resistance and plenty of ROM.
My only gripe is that after walking on a good amount of unexpected dirt on the first day there was a lot more wear on the soles than I'd like. They are that very soft rubber like I had on my Dynafit boots. I used some aquaseal sr to repair the cut up areas. But I don't think they'll last very long. If only they would use some hard rubber like on my Backlands!
I guess another gripe is that it's a pain to remove the liners for drying. I followed some instructions that I found from Fischer to move the cuff out of the way and roll down the gaiter, and that makes it easier but still tricky.
Still pretty happy with these. On longer tours I found a fit issue where the clog was too restrictive around my ankle. This led to some rubbing and soreness on my medial malleoli. Working with a bootfitter, we put in some varus wedges and punched the clog a little anterior of the hot spots. I may still need a little more room there but it's been going well for me so far on recent longer tours. Overall, this is less punching than I've needed on other boots. I got a mondo 30 in these rather than the 29 I've usually rocked in the past. I like having the space and can still tell that my big toe just barely fits anyway.
Ski performance is good for me. I think they will ski better with an intuition MV to take up a little volume.
No wear issues so far but I still think the soles are soft compared to a Vibram or Atomic sole.
