    Soft shell search

I lost my Patagonia Soft Shell. It was 10 years old, had a huge helmet compatible hood, and the fuzzy insulation (like chicks ski boot liners) on the inside.

Who makes a good soft shell these days? Patagonia doesn’t seem to have one, unless it’s the R2 hoodie and I’m missing something?

I saw Cody had one on in the last 50 Project, anyone else give the Solomon soft shell a shot? I don’t love the white.

    Any recommendations?

Freeride Systems Antero 2 (not 2+).

Mine is already 8 years old and looks brand new. I bought a replacement but never wear it because #1 is still rockin.

Grid fleece lining, absolutely silent, great helmet-compatible hood. Ticks all your boxes.

Patagonia does make a no frills softshell, the upstride, which isn't super well received. Current closest to what you're looking for would be the R1 or (warmer) R2 techface. I have a R1 techface, I use it as a touring mid in winter when it's colder and snowing (sheds a suprising amount of snow) and use it for my outerlayer shell for the downs for BC skiing/riding in warmer weather. I also use it for spring days in the resort when it's above say 45 degrees. It has been very durable for how thin/lightweight it is.

If you're looking for a ski specific piece, I would recommend checking out the BD dawn patrol which has several ski specific features. I wouldn't bother with the Dawn Patrol Hybrid.

^^^^^ Ill second this. Im rockin' my new half rack this morning. As AugustWest said the helmet-compatible hood is great. It doesn't feel like the jacket is pulling between your shoulders and the helmet. Plus, made in Colorado by skiers and not made by communists.

I like that FA stuff a lot, especially for the price. I own their lightest weight softshell and it gets a lot of use. What I don't like about their stuff is the sizing is anything but athletic cut.

I have an Arc'teryx Gamma MX softshell which is (now) Arc's heaviest weight softshell. I've owned it for about 6 years. This could be along the lines of what you're looking for as it does have a lightly brushed interior and the fabric is pretty burly. Huge helmet compatible hood. Great jacket. Not cheap but also not difficult to find on sale or on a swap site.

pretty open ended question here, since "softshell" has a very wide swath.

For mid-season touring, colder days, or storm days Ive been pretty jazzed on the standard BD Dawn Patrol. HAB has the Dawn Patrol Hybrid and likes it quite a bit as well.

For warmer, spring, and just about every other day of the year - the OR ferrosi is great. Theyve got a full zip and a anorak version which I think fits a tad better, but no good place to stash skins. However, its a great all-year round type of jacket and its fairly cheap to buy new too.

Gamma LT Hoody but they seem to be sold out everywhere. More breathable than the Dawn Patrol and more weather resistant. Not warm though. If you’re looking for something with some warmth but still a bit of weather resistance then I second the Patagonia R1 Tech Face.

I agree I got a Gamma, so up here if you buy one on-line from Arcterxy they ship it free and if your don't like it ship it back free which is not that usual of a shipping option in Canada

its a pretty atheletic cut, my biggest beef is you can't fit a cell phone in the breast pocket, would it kill arcterxy to design a shell with room for a cel phone cuz everbody has one nowdays?

I also have the Patagucci with R1 tech face and i like it > the Gamma but I couldn't find another one on line so I got the Gamma

That jacket has a slim cut. XL tall fits perfectly for my 6’5” 240# frame. Not much room for more than a base layer under it
