Well, here we are, almost a year later, and...

People will be allowed to continue using and repairing gas-powered equipment, and stores can continue selling existing inventory. But the law requires manufacturers to sell only zero-emissions equipment in California starting with model year 2024.

California’s all-electric shift is ramping up. Here’s what will start vanishing from shelves in January

Reading that article ^^, there's also an impending ban on gas-powered generators, zero-emissions ones will be required in 2028. How's that gonna work?

So the fruit inspection stations at the CA border will now be looking for gas powered lawn equipment and generators coming from NV?
    Kill all the telemarkers
But they’ll put us in jail if we kill all the telemarkers
    Telemarketers! Kill the telemarketers!
Oh we can do that. We don’t even need a reason

    Ok
Tech is getting better. And you had enough time to recharge and swap batteries.

But. What about the contractor blowing 20 drives after a storm?
Or clearing walkways in a private subdivision.

Man. If you folks ever went to a ski resort you would be amazed
They have so many people blowing early in the morning to clear out those big overnight dumps. I’m sure electric will work for that as long as they have a few hundred batteries.

Yup. Range isn’t there yet for a lot of those scenarios. Power is though. And for 95% of homeowners in snow areas I’d wager that the technology is there and adequate even if it isn’t completely economical.
    focus.

You can still use gas, just hook up the generator to your Soda Stream. (Seriously--there's a company talking about generators that emit and capture commercial CO2. Now all of us have to do our part and drink more soda and sparkling water.)

The emissions from one hour of lawn mower or leaf blower use is equal to a hundreds and hundreds of miles of passenger car use, so saying we should always use today's technology is just short sighted.
On average, a small engine has 15x more exhaust pollutants than a passenger car. If the small engine runs 1 hour on .5 gallons of gas, that equates to 7.5 gallons driven in a car @ 25 mpg= 187 miles

Outdoor power equipment, aka small engines only use a fraction of a % of the gas consumed in the US

I have/use both ends of the polluting spectrum. I "rake up" leaves, but mow the grass with a 1994 Lawn-Boy 2 stroke running a lean "high altitude" main jet at an auto mix of 64:1 oil

I always loved that line, used it many a time. I'm sure a savvy marketeer could rework it into a PSA campaign. Maybe Billy Bob would even bring Carl out of retirement?

Reporting that I’ve heard on the bill always seems to point its intent toward use of gas blowers in suburbia.

True, but it also is trying to steer people toward diesel and propane generators, since the NOx emissions are so much less. https://www.rvingknowhow.com/california-generator-ban/

If the law keeps generators out of campgrounds I'm all for it.

That rving article was helpful. First time i'd seen the hair split for chainsaws and the info about farm tools.

Yup I thought others might find it useful.

In other news, I’m seeing ads for a $4000 solid state battery/power source that’s half the weight of the lithium ion ones we’ve all become familiar with.

Nice to see solid state is becoming a reality, albeit expensive at this point naturally.
