"It's with our deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident today."

Just learned this while watching the tragedy unfold on Monday Night Football. 2023 off to a shitty start.

The guy really made a lot of great motorsports content. Seemed really down to earth and loved what he was doing. So sad to hear of his passing.

    Wasatch County Sheriff's Office

"On January 2, 2023 at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Wasatch County 911 Center received a call reporting a snowmobile accident in the Mill Hollow area.
Search and Rescue, along with law enforcement from Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office, Utah State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service responded.
The driver, Kenneth Block, 55-year-old male out of Park City, Utah, was riding a snowmobile on a steep slope when the snowmobile upended, landing on top of him. He was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.
Mr. Block was riding with a group but was alone when the accident occurred.
The State Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.
We are saddened to hear of the loss of Kenneth and our hearts are with his family and friends so deeply affected.
We thank all of our first responders for their continued service."

Huge bummer. Seemed like the guy had it pretty well figured out how to make fun into a sustainable career, which I think is something that many of us aspire to.

    Fuck!
Thought this would be about more of his usual shenanigans, especially with his current contract with Audi. My favorite crazy car guy who was guiding his daughter perfectly.

    RIP

Such a bummer, all around. He left a lot of projects in the pipeline. The Pike’s Peak 2300lb 1400hp mid-engine AWD Hoonipigasus is insane. There are also build videos for Lia Block's 1985 Audi Ur-Quattro. 5-cylinder Audi's sound better than just about any other engine type:

When I was 16 we had a "summer rally course" that was just a parking area for an unsanctioned dirtbike track and a winter rally course that was the parking lot in an industrial park we'd go drift around and wreck the shit out my my '97 cavalier. My brother and his homies would call me Ken Blockhead.

RIP to an inspiration, and unknowingly at the time, the guy who taught me how to drive in snow.

Not trying to cunt up KB’s thread, but he was definitely a different breed. Different level behind the wheel and clearly saw risk differently than most of us. Both, his passing and the female ski mountaineer earlier this year, it blows me away when people build a family and then their chips get cashed. I guess it’s the only thing they know or they feel it’s worth it. It’s an internal debate I have, and it’s a tough one to have externally because it’s so personal. But, I just can’t stop thinking about the loss to his family. Maybe some how they’re reconciled to the fact that any day it could happen.

I mean, he wasn't doing anything uniquely dangerous. He was riding a snowmobile up an (apparently too) steep hill and it flipped on him. It wasn't during a filmed segment (as far as I know) or one of his dangerous specialties (which were very carefully planned and controlled as much as possible), so I'm not sure his passing brings up the issue in the same way. In some ways it's more a reminder that bad things can happen to any of us at any time unexpectedly, so make the most of your time.

I do agree that the issue you bring up is a real and serious one and I'm sure he probably considered it at some point, but his death seems more unfortunate than related.

^^^ Yup, seen plenty of guys ride a wheelie up a couloir. He's done way more dangerous stuff than that...
