Ok, I have one about a small tree…way back in T-Ride, my cousin launched a little air, got out of balance, and landed on lob of a branch…and got literally sodomized by it. Had to go to the hospital, it was awful and a little hilarious at the same time. She was mortified.

Can confirm trees hurt. I’m 0 for 2 in high speed tree encounters - fully displaced tib/fib in round one and fully displaced mid-shaft humerus in round two. At least I got some cool hardware out of the deal…

I broke 6 ribs hitting a tree on SnowvKing once. Super-duper awesome. One of my most painful boo-boos.

Skied a pitch today and was hanging at the bottom with some friends. All of a sudden hear folks on the lift scream and then the loudest thud. Look up the slope and a kid had just nailed a tree. He lost his skis and poles but he hit is so hard his backpack had somehow come open and all of his shit was flying everywhere. One of the guys I was with picked up kid's wallet about 20 feet from the guy.

Guess he was hauling ass, clipped a rock, spun out of control, then hit the tree. He chilled for a minute or two, told us he was ok, then started hiking up to get his shit. It was kind of scary.

I smoked a tree in the mobey dick trees at mt Spokane. Was gs’ ing through them high AF and came around a huge pine to find another one behind it. Let the skis rebound and got both bases mid boot sole against it, double released at the toes and went up the tree and then fell in a lump at the base. Super fucking lucky…My 210 coupe de Monde dynastars not so much. Left big half moon indents across both ski bases. Just crushed the omega rib I guess. And holy shit my ankles hurt for a week

    Fun thread
Heal up well and soon to all recently injured.
So had just moved to Whitefish in 07-08 i think. Pretty decent winter all told, snowed like 440" or so, which was amazing to a kid coming from 10 years of colorado high n dry. So was having alotta fun exploring around and finding the little cliffs n jibs and deep stashes.
There was this one little funny tree island in a bigger bowl that i'd skied around either side of a bunch before. Looked like a small face you could squeeze maybe two small turns into and then it rolled over steep and then a narrow spot un the trees to shoot thru and out into the open spot below that no one ever hit cuz it's right below the trees.
So decided to hit it and found out why it was always unskied. The steep roll was just a small cliff and all the snow sluffed out from under and i kinda tipped over and started skiding backwards down the steep spot. Felt something bonk the inside of my leg and looked down and i was about to be assraped by a 2 foot pointy stump.
Sort of got my hands against the stump and prevented anal defilement but then was hung up with one ski tail hung up on the stump and just stuck and dangling.
Tried for a bit but couldn't haul myself back up so ended up just popping that ski off and flopped/slid down the rest of that little steep spot and into the trees below.

    Nothing injured but my pride.

Follow up. Solid day spent in buttery fresh yesterday pretty much ignoring the soreness, then not much sleep cause of NYE last night, and I am definitely feeling it day two. Damn. Both shoulders fucked up. Back is sore as shit, as is the side of my ass. Both hands have bruised up fingers, neck hurts, and my elbow is bruised to shit. I always forget the soreness comes on the second day.

Still lucky as hell and I know that. But it seems I’ll get to carry a reminder around for a bit longer. Might be an easy day today.

    Don’t hit trees, kids.

I feel like this becomes even more pronounced the older I get. I stubbed my toe last week and next day it wasn't that bad. Two days later I can barely walk. Had to ski in my Dalbellos AKA my "Gout boots" because they are more roomy in the forefoot for when my foot is swollen.

FYI alternating Vitamin I and Tylenol is really good for pain management and inflammation if you can limit the booze. I can't so I just take small amounts of vitamin I.

Smoke Trees, don't ski into them

I used to squeeze between tight trees all the time, until I finally got bashed. Canyons by park city...one of those leftover 'Knobs' after a branch was cut off, got me near right bicep. Not super bad- but it gave me a bleeding bruise even though it did not puncture my jacket. The eye opener was about 2 minutes later as we skied to the chair lift I could tell my body was going into mild shock-nauseous, hot and sweating, almost dizzy & weak. Must have hit me in some martial arts pressure point. Took about 10-15 minutes to recover-that bleeding bruise nagged me for about 6 weeks.

I've got three of these - a good indicator of my bonafide JONG status!

    1. Was racing a buddy at the Canyons, we had raced the same run twice for some paltry amount of money, he'd won once and I'd won once. Thought I could easily beat him for our winner take all third race by cutting off the run through the trees (I think it was called "The Aspens"). I was almost back out onto the little groomer and had started to look ahead to see if my gambit had worked rather than focusing on my last few turns and hooked a tip All of the sudden was headed straight for a tree at full speed. I leaned hard left and pushed off to avoid smashing my face into it and wrapped my right arm around it. I was shook and my shoulder was brutally sore for several days but happy to be conscious. Probably would have torn my shoulder except I was only 17 at the time. Needless to say I lost the race...

    2. Skiing at Whitefish in some chalky crusty mess, tried to make a turn and got hooked up in the crust like a jong and ended up splitting my legs around a 2-4" tree. Hardest I've ever hit my nuts in my life, thought I might lose one. Skied down to the mid mountain restaurant and massaged my balls while I drank a beer. The rest.of that trip anytime I hit a bump or god forbid forgot about my injury and jumped, I was sick to my stomach.

    3. Was skiing down Blackcomb Glacier for the first time after having skied Sapphire Chute and feeling pretty proud of myself. Right about where the Glacier funnels down into whoop-de-doos there are a few little tree islands and I wasn't really decisive about which way I wanted to go. Realized I needed to make a high speed turn to one side or the other and when I tried to cut hard just slid on scraped up hardpack where lots of people had scrubbed their speed. Instead of turning I slid into a nice strong sapling at 30+. Caught it directly with my ribs. There was at least 30 people standing nearby who all let out groans or other unfortunate sounds. In my embarrassment I popped up and quickly proclaimed I was fine and skied around the corner. But within 30 seconds the shock had worn off and I was not fine. I alternated between cussing and deep breathing shock holding my ribs the rest of the way down. Luckily I was in my early 20s at the time and was able to ski the rest of my trip even with purple and green ribs.

Retelling all of these has reminded me as I enter my mid thirties how little I want to smash into a tree again...

From the lift at Snowbowl saw a guy catch an edge, get spun around, and smack a tree so hard it sounded like a hollow coconut. I will never forget that sound. He did not move for a long time, but he was gone when we skied down.

We have a winner! ^ best tree story, so far(if you were not the one on the receiving END)

You don't have to be going fast to get critically injured
    >Years ago at Arrowhead in New Jersey(shitty rope tow spot we used to sled and disc ride) Some little kid, around 10 yrs old was riding a sleigh head first. Going str8 towards a row of trees pretty darn slow-no faster than jogging pace-he hit a tree- Head 1st.

Within 2 minutes he was vomiting & in convulsions. Ambulance came in about 10-15 minutes.. never did hear if he was O K, sure hoped so.

This was well b4 helmets were a 'thing'...

Almost had to chose between hitting a tree or hitting my bro yesterday. Chose the tree, but was able to stop just short. I like leaving options, and I didn’t leave myself any when he had to lay it down. Good reminder for me,

Hauling ass through a tight traverse through trees (that everyone hauls ass through) and there's a family hanging out in the middle of it. Almost smoked a tree, but I found an out at the last second. Feel kinda bad for yelling at them. They apologized and I said "All Good"! Ah, the holidays.

Came in here to post this. Trees don't move. Even small ones.

I was visiting my brother out in Snowmass Colorado when I was about 16 or so. I was desperately trying to keep up with him when he skied over a small ridge. He pre-jumped it, and his skis barely left the snow.

I, not realizing what he did, went flying off this little ridge into a small grove of Pines. I hit the trees high enough, and I wasn’t injured. But, as I slid down into the middle of the trees, I realized I was trapped.

I was wearing my poles around my wrists, and my skis didn’t release. I was all twisted up and could not get free. Luckily for me, a stranger came and helped me out of the trees.

I met my brother about a mile further down the run. He asked me if I was all right? I said sure, why? It turns out some other people had seen what happened and related it to him on the slope.

I was really hoping I would not have to admit to my error!

January 2021... I slide into the DMs of this cute guy on a ski forum. He flies to Utah to go on a ski date with me at Solitude. He fires out of a short chute and crashes knees first into a tree and breaks both his legs. I take him to the ER. Massively shattered patella on the left and small fractured femur on the right. Lucky to be alive. He gets surgery and stays with me 17 nights to recover. He flies home, and I call him every day for 6 months to check on his physical therapy. We fall in love. I move across the country to be with him. We live happily ever after.

January 2023... I see your photo of a shattered kneecap from a tree collision and go, "aww how romantic".
