I've read this thread twice, and I still can't tell who we're accusing of entitlement. Is it the OP for feeling entitled to Chair 9 terrain? Or is it Telluride for feeling entitled to take their sweet time?

While you guys go at the OP's "entitlement" I think he makes a point about cheeseparing that is especially germane in light of Southwest Airlines' recent meltdown that was almost entirely due to corporate greed. How do we know that Telluride management did not negotiate a discount penalty off the lift installer in exchange for letting the schedule slide?

Maybe I’m missing some context but that does seem ridiculous to have an entire lift running that serves uncontrolled terrain. Gates I can understand but who builds a lift for that?

Sorry if this was all hashed out back in 2015 and I missed it. Don’t want to hijack the thread and all that. AND like I said I do see the O.P.s point and also the irony that it goes both ways.

Beep required keeps the tourists, gapers, and pedantic lawyers out of the terrain. It has been working fucking great since 2008 and lots of folks happily put up with it. The hike-to terrain elsewhere at the hill has required a beeper since forever so they manage it the same. It is as much about body recovery as it is about partner responsibility.

That lift is truly expert-only, with no grooming, no signage, cliffs and hairy shit for 1700ft of sustained vert. One of the best anywhere. And they do plenty of avy control. Go ski it and then form an opinion.

    What? That's so untrg.
    ;-)

I just had another round with Alpy Patrol about their QR code/card approach versus requiring appropriate avie gear after the website locked me out of getting the QR code.
    Untraction there.

It's weird how many people don't hold the institutions accountable and blame the chickens for the state of the henhouse.

A few years ago I drilled a dewatering project at the end of West Oak St. right near the gondola in town. We were drilling and installing a dewatering system so the contractor could install a footing for an elevator system. A car elevator system with parking in the basement. This was the ONLY time I was paid to ski. No drilling on Sunday (paid to ski) and once we started the dewatering system I needed to be in town every two or three hours to measure discharge rates (paid to ski). It was fucking beautiful. To answer directly to the OP don't hold your breath waiting for Telluride to offer you a discount on a pass because a certain lift is not running. With some dude installing a car elevator and Oprah's plane sit-in a few miles away it doesn't seem likely that they care much about discounting anything.

Last year at Mount Bachelor the Skyliner chair ceased operation after the second week of the season because of cracks in the bullwheel.

And this year the Outback Chair is operating at 2/3 speed because the main motor is shot.

    Couldn’t have foreseen those failures!

Guess how much of a discount has been granted for these avoidable mishaps?

I'm trying to prevent Telluride from becoming this world-class, snooty, ritzy place where only the rich and the affluent can live, you know? It's important for people like me to be here, 'cause this is what Telluride's all about. Funky culture, you know? And when I'n'I leave and all my brethren leave there'll be no funky culture left. You'll go to the Last Dollar Saloon and you'll see a buncha rich dweebs lookin' around at each other goin' "Where is everybody? I thought this place was cool and funky".

Blue Knob was without their best terrain laps mid-station lift for at least one full season, maybe two?? Even thought they had competition right up the road the prices didn't change while the lift was down.. Broken and no parts available at the time.

That said. Anyone who has the time and resources to ski, even only free access hiking.. anyone who GETS TO SKI is entitled to some degree. Greedy resorts take advantage of our resources?? Yep!

Did you know that Mission suggests carrying rescue equipment with you in the terrain that you hike your 8 yo out to? That’s what the beacon checker is for at the top of 2. That’s why there’s a disclaimer at the Windy gate.

I have been out there more than once and have seen a patroller get taken down while ski cutting Bowl 4 and Microwave. That’s why it’s referred to as mitigation and not control these days. Just food for thought.

Same goes for Central Park. Did you know that Jackson’s Hole in Central Park got it’s name because the patrol director got caught in a slide and buried and broke his humerus after “control” work?

Of course everyone is so much safer with a $400 beacon.

Maybe we shouldn’t be allowed to ski anything without a beacon. Ski areas are rife with slippery slopes. Omg.
