At the speed I was going, not surprised at all that I am still hurting this far out. X rays were negative. Talked to a rn here at work and she said it will be 6 weeks. Bruised ribs with a bonus of popped cartilage at the sternum. I asked when I could go skiing again, and she said well you can ski anytime, just don't fall and know that it might just hurt like hell.

Been switching off between aspirin, and ibuprofen, with a heavy dose of sativa. Pretty much took 1/2 oxycodones in order to sleep for the 1st 10 days. Now just a gummy and i am good to go.

I have to say, this is going to be one of the hardest things I have recovered from. And I have blown out my knees 3 times.

Buck up and rest. Don't do anything that might set me back, chill and I'll be good to go next year.

    I am a skier.

Yeah, if you fall, best to wait for someone to come along to help you up, unless you have some fentanyl handy.

Stacked it hard on the MTB about two weeks ago. X-ray was negative, but I knew I was wrecked.
CT scan proved me right. Displaced fracture on #10, fractures of 9, 7 and 6. Big bottle of Tramadol is helping, but yeah this hurts.

Is there any kind of support wrap that can help with broken ribs, or at least give a little support so you don't put pressure on them doing everyday actions? A couple days ago I had a bike accident on a straight flat street with a bike lane in the evening, (I wonder a little if I got brushed by a car), and woke up in a C-spine collar being wheeled into a CT scan (and with a cop handing me a victim info form about my missing phone). Broken ribs 5 & 6, only minor subcranial bleed (thanks helmut), bruises and road rash up and down my right side, and my right shoulder is very sore but appears to be a soft tissue injury with nothing broken. Quite possible, as I did a similar soft tissue injury to my other shoulder 20 years ago in a cyclocross race.

Anyway, in the hospital they told me don't bother wrapping my torso as there isn't anything that really speeds up rib healing, but I wonder if there's anything useful to help from getting into painful positions, or to protect against bumps. I can sit around or walk without much pain, but getting in and out of bed sucks. In a crowded grocery store, I was afraid that if someone walked into me, I would fall on the floor in a sobbing heap. I have an old Arva padded vest for trick skiers that I was tempted to wear, but it's much too big. Do I just radiate "Don't touch me" vibes for the next 4-6 weeks?

Yep. And you gotta be able to breathe deeply to avoid pneumonia... no wrap.

    Jacked up ribs

Use your arm or hand to splint the ribs for moving, coughing or sneezing. We don’t recommend a wrap of any kind for ribs anymore.

I had five displaced rib fractures and they popped the cartilage at the sternum, tore the rectus muscle at the bottom of the rib cage and broke my scapula. Pneumothorax, it sucked for months. You’ll get through this.

If you have an arm sling kicking around, throw that on when you go out. That generally radiates "stay away from me" messaging... also radiates "easy robbery/mugging victim" vibes too so be smart about where you go out and about if you live in a place with sketchy areas.

The other option is to not shower and let the stank keep people away.

Yep. Not much else to do. Don’t take nsaids or ibu
    Prevents bone healing.

And yeah getting out of bed sucks. Best is rolling out into your knees.

If you figure it out shout it from the rooftops.
I'm just now feeling better after popping 2 ribs out on opening weekend at Rose. Still scared to sneeze.

Do take NSAIDs, orthopedists prescribed NSAIDs post op and suggest you use them prn. General Surgeons and Trauma Specialists as well. You can take ibuprofen and acetaminophen together and it’s a great pain control. If your doctor will prescribe Robaxin get some. It alleviates the painful muscle spasms.

    Interesting emoji quotes of me.

Anyways. NSAIDs and bone healing don’t work. You need the inflammation to trigger the healing response.

Take oxy or acetaminophen. It’s fine.
But you want the inflammation to heal bone breaks.

The benefits of the pain relief outweigh the negligible delay of bone healing.

No doubt. The first few days go for the ibu

    But long term it sucks.

Side story after I broke my leg skiing.
Ortho tells this bizarre story about a rodeo clown. I’m not in rodeo country. Anyways. Asks the clown if he’s a smoker. Nope. Then the clown said he pops 800mg ibu four or five times a day. He stops the Ibu and his bones knit. Idk. Maybe anecdotal.
But I did read some studies years ago that supported the idea that inflammation is good for bone healing.
