Part of the magic of KH is that it's basically you get to the top and now you have to hike for the good stuff, which makes things more of an adventure. I like it.

Gondola midstation would be perfect here though.
I did a few runs at Pano last year with a guy that was very involved in that project. The layout of the hill was ignored by bean counters, basically from Europe < who were building the mountain as part of an asset enhancement project for the building of the PEI bridge I believe. The Dutch. There was supposed to be a mid station with several lifts out of that point to parts elsewhere. The mid station was cancelled to save several million bucks. My brother was the #3 at the Horse for several years and confirmed the assessment. The gondola is the Achilles heel of that ski area.

Hey Nelson Mags! Skiing at Whitewater tomorrow and would love to hook up with some locals for some slack country. Four Jackson Hole skiers with lots of SC/BC experience. Looking foward to sliding with any all takers.

Interesting! Wish I had lots of dollars, I'd swoop in and fix things up at all my favourite places.

Is this where the "secret" run name 'Dutch Wallet' comes from?

Had a look at the latest masterplan for Kicking Horse dated 2009. Negative on putting a mid-station in for the gondola but much talk about alternative lifts to access the top. A decade and a bit later it seems as much a fantasy as RMR's original masterplan (27 lifts IIRC). If I was looking for an easy job I might consider one drawing lifts that will never be realized on topographic maps

welcome to the Mountain Resorts Branch/Gov policy of allocating Crown land development areas (real estate) based on the number of lifts...

It would have been on the initial plans from the hill design team to the Dutch, many years prior. By 2009, the gondola was already in place. The Dutch didn’t build according to the recommended plan. It was largely ignored.

Masterplans get revised. So the 2009 one I looked at was ruling out ADDING a mid-station to the existing gondola. Though it was considered feasible it said the gondola was already running at capacity at peak times.

I think everybody's giving way to much credit to the idea that RCR would cough up money for those/any improvements. Given the rumoured price Mr Edwards paid for KH I'm not really surprised they havent changed anything.

    REVY:
Day 1, cold for west coast but warm for east coast - also apparently too cold for the upper gondola as it was not running until the sun kissed the haul rope at 9:45, loading by 10:00am. Little bit of new snow, poked around and found good turns all over the place. Anything lower half of the mountain ('bout halfway between Revelation and Stoke bottom) was fucked but again, for a couple of icecoasters we DGAF.

Day 2, warmer but still chilly, more new snow, things skiing a lot better down to Revelation which was nice. I realize it's all about the Stoke and above here, but it was nice to get to crank out some high speed vert. Gondola opened without a hitch.

Hot Tips That You Probably Already Know:
    1) Get to Mack Outpost at 11:15 for a burger. This was honestly the best burger I've ever had in my life. Remember to get a double and ask for pickles. By 11:30 lineup will be out the door.
    2) Hike to top of subpeak is stupid and not worth it, and is 100% for tourons. Just stick to Lemming Line like everyone else.
    3) Greely Bowl is a lot of work for not a lot of vert, but still fun and who doesn't want to get cliffed-out from time to time?
    4) When you find those fresh 10 untracked turns just past a rope line down Vertigo (well, 2 tracks now), it's because there is a large set of cliffs just below.
    5) Revy has some very good skiers and riders, pretty much all of whom are respectful and polite (I notice different attitude @ Whistler but maybe it's just busier).
The TR is much appreciated. Heading there with my partner and a friend in a couple days for said friend's AST 1. Partner and I both are avy savvy. Did you head out to Montana Trees at all?

Nope - didn't even feel the need to. Crowds were sparse and the alpine was firin' enough for us.

Probably a bit late to update but 9 days ago RMR slack skied quite well so after 40cms + it probably skies better. MIN 10days ago reported sz 1.5s on storm snow but again, stale dated

Howdy folks! Excited to make my first ever foray into your vicinity. Will be arriving in Revelstoke on Sunday, and skiing between the resort and Rogers Pass next week, before heading out to the Durrand Glacier Chalet on March 4. Am visiting with my wife & a buddy. Would love to get out with some folks either at the resort or in the backcountry. I've got AIARE Lvl 2, 9th season in the backcountry, comfortable with 6-8k days. Buddy is equally educated, more years experience, and comfortable in the 5-6k range. Wife is mellower and will probably do a couple resort days and maybe one 2-3k tour.

I understand the PWL that's been plaguing you all for most of the season has begun to heal. With 6 seasons in Colorado I certainly know the pain. It looks like surface instabilities will remain an issue for the next couple of weeks with new snow and wind, woo! Have been doing some research on Rogers and planning out a few ideas thanks to the Sproul book, Caltopo, and Avalanche Canada obs. Am familiarizing myself with the permitting and parking. Anything else to be aware of?

Would love suggestions for skiing inbounds, skiing Rogers, places to eat, places to drink, and things to do outside of skiing. We are staying right around the corner from the Aquatic Center, seems like a good place for a sauna & a soak, any input in regards to that?

Thanks for entertaining my questions, if any of you ever head down to the Eastern Sierra, feel free to drop me a line.

I wrote a bunch of stuff about slackcountry in RMR, Rogers Pass, things to do, places to eat. It's not worth repeating all the links but they're published on TGR and Snowbrains. Search and they'll show up

As for more up to date info

    - Passport to the Kootenays is a 2 for 1 coupon book for good places to eat and things to do and the Aquatic Centre. Get that from the Revy Visitors Centre

    - Pass has very reduced opening of permitted areas for various reasons. Carefully pay attention to morning bulletins

    - RMR slack is running well. However even with latest snowfall the skin from the valley town hits (Fingers etc) are bony.

My trip to Nelson is off. My friend's passport renewal has not gone to schedule. Painful as I was so looking forward to it. Switching to Northern Idaho. Things look favorable thus far. Next year!

Skied Thursday and Friday at Red Mountain and had a fantastic time. It was on the heels of some new snow the previous day(s) and there were still plenty of spots holding fresh turns. It was pretty cold and the skied up snow was still quite soft and fun. Took advantage of the snow host tours they offer and still can't believe it was a free service. The host flat out ripped and took us into some pretty excellent terrain that I likely wouldn't have discovered on my own (Doug's Run, for instance). 10/10 - would recommend, what a great mountain and town.

Q for Red/Rossland folk: We are headed there for a fam resort ski trip but I need some cardio to keep training going and looking for beginning/end of day workout.
-Doesn't seem like there is a skin up option on Red.
    -Not a nordic guy
...so anyone know of drop-in gyms or community centres for a quick cardio hit?

People skin up to Motherlode for opening. Lots of low consequence slack country options. Otherwise https://www.elevate-sport.ca

Excellent thanks. I'll take low consequence slack for sure. Any specific advice on that?

    Grey-Kirkup to Kirkup Summit?

    Paradise lodge to Mt Roberts?

It would be difficult to get into trouble on the South side of Kirkup (obvious lines) or the East side of Whitewolf Ridge (less obvious). Mt Roberts has more challenging terrain, steep trees and chutes but gets skied a lot (rarely slides). All drop you back into the resort.

I'm stoked to be heading back to BC this Friday; hitting up Red for a full week. thanks for the info on the sidecountry lines and the mountain hosts, will definitely hit them up for a few runs.

indyjones, I whipped up this quick google maps snip for my buddies so we could look at the different slack options, helped me to visualize the different zones Red has listed on their website, maybe it'll help you too - if you see a guy in line with a green jacket and navy pants, holler about change for a nickel, cheers.

Cross post from the Rockies thread, but figured I’d try here too.

Looking to head north to ski Friday through Monday (3/17-3/20). Can anybody help steer me towards decent snow? Currently looking at KH, Revy and Fernie. Would consider Red and WH20too. Anybody have boots on the ground conditions update to share for any or all of the above locations?
