    Roofers, need shingles recommendation

I'm trying to get a new roof put on before it gets too cold. The roofer doing it recommends Certainteed brand shingles. I actually don't know the guy but he comes through a friend that owns a restoration company. I asked one of my patients thats a general contractor about it and he said he likes Tamco heritage line shingles better. I know nothing about them. Is there actually differences in brands that I should be aware of or just use whatever the roofer recommends and what color I like best. I'm in northern UT. Don't need any fancy architectural stuff but happy to pay for quality if it makes sense.

Generally, I’m my experience, as long as the warranty length is the same then the major brands are about equal. They have lines with 15/20/30/40 year ratings, and as long as the ratings are the same then they are about the same thickness.

After you pick a quality/warranty rating, then it’s about look, color and cost.

    Not sure that helps.

What he said. Main thing is to make sure they follow the fastening pattern per warranty requirements.

The installer might be certified by certainteed and therefore you get a better warranty. If you think it’s important get a workmanship warranty backed by the manufacturer.
I would think the chance of material failure is virtually zero.

    For example:

The Golden Pledge Limited Warranty and Silver Pledge Limited Warranty both offer coverage for misapplication of your GAF Products and flashings at valleys, dormers, chimneys, and plumbing vents (“Covered Flashings”). This coverage is also commonly referred to as “workmanship” coverage, and these warranties are only available through GAF Master Elite Roofing Contractors. You're with GAF? Before I retired, I ran a commercial roofing company. We were Master Select certified. Good program. Didn't deal with 3 tabs too much but the commercial products from GAF were our go-to. Warranty programs are great.

If you're 60 years old you don't need the 40 year shingles.

More important than the product brand would be:
    - Are they a certified installer for the products they are using?
    - Are all the products they plan to use in the same “family” / designed to be used together? (IE not using a starter shingle from GAF and an
    underlayment from OwensC.)
    - What is the warrant coverage from the contractor vs the manufacturer

    Certainteed is a good company.

The warranty lengths are basically by weight of product.

Asphalt shingles are a sacrificial layer product. You know they’re done when you stop getting granules rubbing off into the gutters. Thicker/heavier they are the longer they last

As long as you buy a major brand you should be good

We’ve been happy with GAF, Malarkey, and Certainteed

And yes, follow their install instructions for warranty: compatible materials and methods
