As predicted red at castle and most of sunshine hasn't spun up. I've skied many -30 days with the whole mountain open, what happened these recent years?

Thanks for the tips on cold weather Banff! Luckily we've skied within a few degrees of this before, so one more layer than that+foot warmers and we were good physically, apart from the sticky snow. (I thought I skated at home, but uphill is way easier than this!)

But the reports from SSV and LL are a bit odd. SSV showed all lifts running this morning until well after we'd taken their exit and then the board at the base had 2 lifts running. Angel spun early but no guests. They finally opened Standish to get half the lifts, but those wifi Hotspots in the warming tents are really good at showing Lake Louise's website so you can see they opened 11 lifts (allegedlies). So 6 below treeline was sad times.

We're trying to figure out if half of LL (as predicted on FB) is worth burning a day or if we should take the advice and return in spring.

First I'm gonna go build my car a tent with my new Canadian Tire plastic so I can plug in what heaters we have to the conveniently-located outlet. I have a feeling that's gonna clarify my thoughts on the subject. Probably shoulda bought some ketchup chips for after.

Back when i used to pack 2 neck tubes(we didnt have fancy shaped tech balaclavas then) , an extra , and along with an extra pair of goggles and ski in my tr9 touring boots. Ive got a few pair of gogs now and a few pair of different weight "buff" balaclavas(soo good those things) and my touring boots ski better than my old alpine boots as opposed to the glorified leather hiking boot performance of the nordica tr9's but no way im skiing in -30 again. Is revelstoke -20? Id do a few laps there

Oh, man, don't remind me. I was hoping to hit RMR, maybe even instead, but driving from Canmore for -22 isn't getting much traction so far.

Sorry for your luck on the cold… kinda Came out of nowhere.

Suggestion- hit Banff hot springs, hike tunnel mtn, check out marbel canyon and Johnston canyon, fondue at the grizzly house, Greek at the Balkan, take a scenic drive up ice fields parkway or go more raw and do spray lakes! Enjoy.

Oh yeah- Canada tire is more like Chinada tire….nothing from Canada in there…lol

On the bright side , at -30 i could spin circuits (platter, paradise, repeat) off the top of The lake with zero lineups all day. Cover everything if you do go. I remember lots of white ears and nose and the aftermath. It was fun though. Hope for an inversion, a sundog . It can be nice

Probably experienced a few lift malfunctions, and people got frostbite or other cold-related injuries, and they decided hey maybe next time we should hold back a bit. Or, maybe new laws surrounding required lift evacuation time based on current windchill numbers?

Ski hill would rather be open than closed I'm sure, I don't think they're just being a bunch of babies about it.

My first time in SSW was in March 2014, we were waiting for the gondola to start running for couple of hours until it warmed up above -30. If I remember right, Goats Eye and Divide were not running. I would probably do it again, I'm kind of stupid that way.

Revy isn't running the Stoke Chair but probably cold enough for the snow quality on the lower mountain to finally dry out and riding the gondolas all day should be manageable.

Much of the rest of western Canada has their share of weather closures. Looks like Thursday, Feb. 23 is a rest day in western Canada.

Exactly. Castle has their cold weather policy on their website. The rationale for not opening is a combination of mechanical, and safety reasons .

Yeah, this nastiness is widespread. Shames not open today due to cold (23rd, possibly tomorrow too).

Yep, Red opened for the tourists, but for me it was my first day off skis in a month.

2022/23 Canadian Rockies and related locations thread..

Tragedy yesterday, RK Heli flies out of Panorama Resort.

    Further update

    https://apple.news/AplQoVM01SHaqpd17tVJ8jw

3 dead, 4 injured, one of the injured is the guide.

RK has had an exemplary record as a Heli ski outfit, with one other fatality in their 52 year history. Having skied with them a couple times, they are exceptionally professional and cautious. This is a huge tragedy that will gut the community.

Marmot opened the terrain from the Peak across to Cornice (Marmot 2) haven't skied it yet, I'm at Canyon instead, long big mountain terrain. Hike away and enjoy.

Hello northerly neighbors. Some friends and I are headed up your way in early April to make a self supported attempt of the WAPTA traverse. Looking for some beta on current conditions. I understand you guys are having a low snow year, and on top of that it seems there are widespread instabilities. Would love to chat with some folks who are familiar with the area and snowpack, feel free to message here or via PM. Thanks.

If your timing works and we get a freeze-thaw cycle to the summits with a decent reset then things would be much different.

The Rockies get a lot of their snow in March April and skiing stable winter powder over a solid freeze-thaw ice base in April does happen, but it’s never a given.

Always best to have the luxury to time your trip as in good weather and the right conditions it’s pretty straight forward.
    All conditions, all terrain.
    Expect nothing, don’t be disappointed.
