Incredibly scenic, quiet but well maintained backroads once you get off the trans Canada. Time the ferry crossing. Pretty much as good as it gets at Red right now.

We are going to Kicking Horse in early/mid-March. Have booked to do 5 days, but now my wife and daughter are going early to do a 2-day 'Rippin Betties' clinic before our 5 days...so, my son and I are trying to decide if we should do:
    - 7 days at KH or
    - 2 days at Lake Louise before KH or
    - 2 days at Revelstoke before KH

Our 2-day plan would be to leave early morning from Golden and ski LL/Revy, stay overnight in LL/Revy, ski the next day and drive back to Golden.

    My questions are:
    - would it be better to just stay at KH? We've skied KH, Fernie, and Pano previously. But not LL or Revy.
    - Would all this driving be too ambitious?

    Thank you in advance. Ryan
If the temps aren't really high in Revy go there, the base is really low (almost pointlessly low). The resort is fun and the town is great, definitely stay there. Make a reservation ahead of time, the restaurants often have waitlists on the busier weekends. LL is a great mountain with good terrain and amazing views, but often has less snow than Revy. Great terrain park usually so you can practice your cork 7's

KH is great, but temper your expectations for this year. Every entrance and traverse is very rocky, but if you make the effort to get into something it usually worth the core shots. Definitely not the best year on record like most resorts in BC at the moment although we have new snow over the last week and more coming.
    I like huge dumps.

KH went off today. 7cm felt like 2ft. Fuez Bowl was just fantastic, but yeah, cat tracks are covered in rocks and mogul fields have loads of sharks. Apparently they don’t have anyone to drive the winch cat so a lot of normal groomed runs are moguls.

My bases look like shit but no core shots yet!

    Fernie was really good today!

15cm overnight but it was medium density so provided good float.

It was nice to actually ski some powder again!

Is that the problem? I figured they just didn't want to groom the small fir trees and shrubs. Having been there in the past I remember long, steep groomers down to the base - figured it was just a low-snow thing.

My bases are the same. Nothing a quick grind won't fix!

Hmmm... I wonder what kinda resume they need for a part time cat driver.

Glad to hear the snow they got is good!

Anyone in the calgary or surrounding area happen to have a set of royal family brakes in a 110mm from the ID version of the binding they want to let got of for cheap/free?

I have ID model 85mm brakes I could trade if that's of any interest.

I have some old version 110mm brakes but it turns out they don't work with the ID model.

    I didn't know then. [emoji17]

I got home and started mounting ID bindings in the existing holes and realized the brakes are not shared.

    Doh!

Rudi’s bowl from mini ridge boot pack. Plenty of knee deep turns to be had.

Seems to be some consistent medium quality turns lately….

Better than the constant mediocre turns of past….

Day after the storm ar Castle was skiing very well today. A little crust under the snow on low angle and the most southern aspects but soft everywhere else and lots of it.

Do you know if this applies to Coast Guard? The website specifies "Canadian-based emergency personnel, including Police, Firefighters, EMS, Licensed Nurses, Military and Veterans" - sometimes we get grouped in with Military (mostly American companies), sometimes with first responders, but it's a total crapshoot. If it does I may need to start planning a spring road trip...

    1) call and ask them

    2) just show your ID and say you would like the discount please.

    3) Odds are lake loiuise will do something similar

    Sad news out of golden.

Fatal slide on T2.5, a popular sidecountry run outside of kicking horse.

Condolences to the friends and family. It has been a really tough year.

    https://avalanche.ca/map?panel=fatal...2.5-2023-02-16

"A group of five snowboarders and one skier were caught in an avalanche in an area known as Terminator 2.5, outside of a ski area boundary near Golden, BC. The avalanche was triggered by the group and four members of the group were involved. Three members of the group were buried by the avalanche, one partially and two completely. The partially buried victim was extracted and had sustained injuries. The two fully buried victims did not survive.A second group of snowboarders was lower in the track when the avalanche was triggered. They were impacted by the slide but were not buried and did not sustain injuries.
The avalanche ran on a weak layer of facets near the base of the snowpack. The very large avalanche measured 115 m wide by 950 m long with a crown depth of 1.5 m."

Looking at the crown/all the tracks on that slope, from my backyard, it’s pretty fucked. Good vid from the guys at the skihill on local conditions.
