Tgapp, brother from a different mother. I can't help but being a wise ass too. Must be I use it to diffuse my anxiety. And it sucks when I run into folks who don't have a sense of humor. I've been seeing more medical professionals than usual lately and it seems like a lot of doctors get their funny bone removed before they get handed their credentials. Of course, I'm not a quitter, I just try harder. Which sometimes makes it worse. Rinse lather repeat. However, once I finally get someone to crack that smile, we're good.

Next time you're at a pharmacy, hold up a box of condoms and ask the person behind the counter if they have a fitting room. Gets a smile at least 30% of the time.

What ended up happening with my kidney is quite complex, and not really a happy ending story.

The long and short of it is that I became good friends with the woman I donated on behalf of (CloudedEyeCat's friend - I only met her after donating) but my organ actually went to someone else, a guy in Washington who I need to send a letter to. The woman - I'll call her K - basically got a 'free kidney' coupon, but she's yet to find an organ which matches her immunosensitivity profile. I went to her wedding, am good friends with her mother, and feel very blessed to have them in my lives. Holding out hope for a miracle, but things aren't in a great place for her.

So being an aging dentist, what if I need stuff later, i.e. a kidney? Does the fact that I donated bump me to the top of the list if I need a transplant?

About half serious on the question, as many folks in their later years need working organs.
In order to properly convert this thread to a polyasshat thread to more fully enrage the liberal left frequenting here...... (insert latest democratic blunder of your choice).

Yeah you get put on the very top of the list for available organs.

The extensive screening process ensures that you do not have CKD and are not prone to developing it (as a consequence of, say, diabetes) but there's always a risk of kidney damage (especially from trauma like in a ski accident), so they just put you at the top of the list so to speak.

My kidney numbers (GFR) are so good that my PCP said that unless I had disclosed I was a kidney donor he would not have known at all - my labs are absolutely consistent with a healthy male in his 30s, so I'm pretty lucky in that regard.

    Tgapp is one helluva person.

Truth be told, I'm a pretty selfish guy. I make good money and buy a lot of toys and spend my time doing things I want to do. And organ donation is definitely self-serving, don't let me tell you otherwise.
Well, I’m a solidly misanthropic guy so I have a different outlook. In any event, I admire you for what ya done. I’ll pick up the tab if ever we meet.

I was afraid to click on this thread cause I figured you’d lost somebody in a car accident or something. This is a way way better organ donation story than I was expecting. Thanks for sharing it, Tgapp. It’s good to know there are folks like you out there.

Only way this TR could have been better would have been for OP to wake up with a sharpie up his butt.

nothing to see here except another Hall of Fame contender thread from tgapp

from butt sharpies to saving lives in one step - and to top it off you went and made turns with your surgeon

porn, goodwill, and skiing - that's a TGR trifecta

Tgapp. Strong work. I'm glad to hear donation has filled your heart with content. I too wish more folks would donate.

Thanks for the butt-sharpies link. That'll be educational.

Please continue the TR with #2 on your list.

Tgapp, you seem to find ways to improve humanity…thx for making the effort…we are better for your efforts

I’ve made a point to not start a Reddit account…don’t need any of those rabbit holes. I’m not starting for butt sharpies, but i did go as far as the age limited login page…lol
