    Step mounting bit

Can someone explain a step bit to me? I have most size drill bits, but I also have a step bit that I almost never use. It’s a four point something by nine point something. But it also has three point something by eight point something on it. I guess I don’t understand how they work, does anyone have any insight or can anyone point me to a previous post that might explain that? Probably a dumb question, but I’m afraid to use it.specially since I have other bits.

Knowing the actual size would help. Sounds like it could be 4.1 stepped to 3.6, overall 9mm deep. Stepped bits were popular for skis with metal. The idea is 4.1 through the metal, then 3.6 for the rest of the hole.

Most shops just use 4.1 or 3.6 now for metal and non metal skis respectively

Like a ski specific stepped bit? A drill bit with a smaller drill bit at the end? It’s just a bit designed to only drill a hole a specific depth (so you don’t punch thru the base of the ski)

Or a normal step bit. Like a cone shaped step bit. They are designed to enlarge a hole in a thin piece of material, mostly used for gauge metal…

Like this. Thanks for the help!

Guess one of the questions is if the ski calls for 4.1/9.5 is this bit ok?

That's a ski bit and you're correct--read the top sheet. Mostly for skis w/ metal in them.

Thanks. Just not seen one with a second measurement (in this case 3.5) so i figured it’s some sort of step bit. Either way thanks all!

I was just looking at buying one of those today. No real need for one since a straight 4.1 bit works fine, but I like the idea of the step.

I believe it was Armada that was specifying using those bits, but looking at the recent tech catalog it appears they no longer are (?).

A ski bit is so much easier to use since it makes a dimple at the right depth and you don’t have to chisel the top sheet after. Way worth it.

Never seen a stepped one like that.
Makes sense. It’s still just a 4,1 bit.
But the tip is 3,5 so it’s smaller where the screw gets smaller and also where it’s only core material.
Should have better holding power I guess.
