Also, FYI, Rueras area has school holidays until March 3rd. Not everywhere in Switzerland has vacations at the same time.

This is good news. Since relocating I have like a three hour drive to Rueras. Crossing fingers my job will provide an open window.

How long does it take to get to Rueras from Geneva? Zurich?

What I'm trying to figure out is what is a reasonable arrival time at the airports to easily get to Rueras that day? And what is a reasonable departure time at the airports so I can easily get there from Rueras that day?

Well its a lot longer from Geneva...maybe 4hrs. driving. Its about 1:45 from Zurich going by memory. It kinda depends if you are driving or going public transpo.

Personally, when flying from Denver, I'm rather take the night flight and then stay the night close to the airport than leaving in the middle of the day and hustle for the ground transfer. And the same in reverse. It really doesn't cost you much/any missed skiing and you are going to have to pay for the lodging one way or the other. Often times in can be an extra day of work on the front end.

It's about 3h30m on public transit from Zurich.

Most answers to logistics and so on are found on the first post of this thread.

    For the millionth time:

    https://www.sbb.ch/en/timetable.html

7 pm landing at Zurich is cutting it really close. Shoot for a 4-5 o'clock at the latest.
That link above gives you all the info you'll need about the trains, the schedules won't change much in winter except there's no busses over the Oberalp Pass.

Best ways to get here are Zurich or Milan. For anyone traveling in a small group, a shuttle service is also a good choice. We can arrange that, rates are 310 chf from Zurich and 290 chf from Milan. From one to five people the price doesn’t change

Every time I start thinking I want to ski the Alps I end up thinking not worth the trouble. This doesn't help.

First off: ETIAS is currently not in operation and no applications are collected at this point.

    Second, it's online and easy.

Granted a lot of destinations in France and Italy require either your own car or some sort of bus or taxi.

    But not in Switzerland.

Nothing compares to the ease of skiing in Switzerland where you get off the plane, get your luggage and go down the escalator to the train station.

The trains, with ski racks at the cars ends, takes you to a village with a change or two, where it's either an easy stroll to your hotel or a jitney picks you up. The first time I went to Andermatt, I looked at my watch when I got out of customs and I was in my hotel in 3 hours. Everyone spoke English.

It is no trouble, so much less than dealing with car rental agencies in the States or Canada and driving shitty roads, dealing with parking, gas and insurance, not to mention crappy American airports.

The rewards include ski complexes that dwarf anything in North America, where W/BC, Revy, Vail, BS or JH are average sized. Where you can ski literally 20 miles from one end of a complex to another, where the on mountain huts are owned by local families, not corporations and the food is fantastic and truly local. Ropes and piste boundaries are only suggestions and the access to terrain is unparalleled, from 6+-mile-long intermediate glacier runs to the birthplace of extreme skiing where you fall you die.

Lift tickets 1/4 the cost of the big NAm resorts. Sure, the big, fancy hotels can be corporate owned, but there's lots of smaller, inexpensive family owned hotels with rooms for less than $150/night. Budgeting $250 a day is easy.

The investment is significantly less in terms of hassle, only a slight bit more in the transatlantic flight cost, but once there, everything is cheaper and the terrain is better. Yeah, you can get skunked for pow, but then it's time to tour in arenas where there's great resources for huttes and trails.

Roosting at Michele and Serena's MountainLodge is the icing on the cake. It's easy access from the train. Plus, Michele is a ski freak, knows all the options for lifts and skin tracks and a local private tram, their place is clean, quiet, great, reasonably priced excellent food and a bar that rocks.
It's no trouble and it's awesome.

And fuck the euroairlines, I'm bringing my trouser snake.

    Hear hear!

And for those who venture outside Switzerland, I can vouch for Italy by rental car. Fly into Milan, drive a few hours to Val d'Aosta, and settle into your apartment in a village that has roman ruins, great bars/restaurants/gelaterias, unbelievable food and drink, and not a single ski tourist. Yet a 15min drive has you either at a non bro-brah resort or skinning into dreamy alpine touring terrain.

It's that good, and so easy.

I'm pretty much in, haven't pulled the trigger yet but will. Should there be a 2024 thread?

I'm likely rolling solo (may convince a low post mag to join me), how do the rooms work? From the hotel website it looked like they're all doubles or bigger, but the beds looked like they could be split? Any option to pair up with others if my buddy can't commit?

ping Michele via info@mt-lodge.com for a room. You can ask for a single, a double or quad. Expense goes up a little for fewer people per room.
It's nice if you know what room config you want, it's makes less decisions for them. Remember, they are herding cats.

There may be a thread popping up...

If there's ever a time to commit when it's a troubling decision, this is it.

Being at the Mt. Lodge, with a bunch of mags, in that valley is an experience. Every penny is well spent and the goods are top notch. From: cheap demos, to tickets, to lodging, to rail fees, to food, to views, it's just awesome.

yeahman would make a solid addition to the crew. Bomber skier fosho.

On the flip side - can you imagine trying to sell skiing at Big Sky to a Euro skier? "It's so sick bro. You shell out like $200/day, pay extra on top of that for every single tram ride, all to ride a tram that accesses like a fraction of the terrain a lot of Euro lifts get to, and whether or not that lift/terrain even opens is tightly controlled by ski patrol." LOL. I feel like their heads would explode with all the stupid crap we put up with.

Heh, yeah. Probably explains why you almost never encounter Europeans at Big Sky.
