Tahoe Area Question

My mom wants to plan a family vacation next year and I threw out the suggestion of somewhere near Lake Tahoe. This would be late May to early June. First off, is that a good time of year to visit? I suspect it would be, but just wanted to make sure. Second, where around the lake should we be looking? I'd say we'd be looking for a degree of solitude (i.e. we don't want to stay in a giant casino hotel), but also reasonably close to restaurants, etc. Good lake access would probably be a priority.

In late May and early June the weather should be pleasant and probably and hopefully smoke free. At lake level there will usually be some snow, depending on sun exposure and if we ever get another big snow year it's possible there could be a lot of snow. At higher elevations snow will be an issue if hiking is in your plans. A less crowded option than staying at Tahoe itself would be Loch Leven lodge on Donner Lake, which is right on the lake and south facing. The water will be cold. There are power boat rentals at the state park and at Donner Lake Village, although I don't know when the rentals start--maybe after your planned trip. There are kayak and paddleboard rentals at the west end beach, again I'm not sure if that early in the season. Tahoe is about 15 miles away.

What to you want to do? Go to the beach at Lake Tahoe? Loch Leven is really cool, but you're a ways from a good Lake Tahoe beach.

My all time fav beach at Tahoe is Baldwin. Stay in SLT (stay away from highway 50. It's loud AF). If you can find a place at Fallen Leaf Lake, that's ideal. Christmas Valley and Meyers have some sweet AirBNB's and are away from the hubbub, but still a short drive to restaurant, shopping and beach. I've also found some nice places of off Pioneer Trail. Just keep your search away from Stateline and you'll be fine.

Great time of year. AVOID MEMORIAL DAY AND WEEK BEFORE.

That time of year you should be able to get lodging around Tahoe City or Kings Beach areas (North Shore). Lake might be a bit cold, but shallows ok. Like OG said, Donner might be an option. Truckee is a few miles down the road and North Shore about a half hour.

Would definitely like to get out on the water to some extent although I realize it's still going to be extremely cold to cold that time of year! Parents are around 80, so probably no major hiking even if things are snow free. But, yeah, general sightseeing, scenic driving, etc. Want an area that's quiet with some modicum of nature but not too far from civilization.

If you come before Memorial Day the Marriott Timber Lodge in SLT is a bargain and senior friendly. Close to the Lake

Pallisades resort should be reasonable that time of year too..but it’s off the lake.

Hyatt in Incline Village is nice too.

Short term house rentals are abundant at Tahoe and Donner Lake. There's a place a few houses from us on Donner that sleeps 6, rents for 373/night. (Listing says waterfront but it's across the road and a strip of land from the water. PM me if you that interests you. It's on VRBO. My kid's inlaws stayed there last year for the wedding and liked it.

Definitely avoid Memorial Day weekend, but right after that was actually pretty mellow this past year because most schools weren't out until the following week.

This place looks pretty awesome, but would the fact that it's right on the main westside road be a problem? How's that location?

Bring right on the west shore is a great spot to be. Bike paths all along there, close to Tahoe City and Sunnyside, etc.

That's not a super busy section of road, particularly at that time of the year and the speed limit is low. Obviously there would be some noise when you're outside but not bad.

West Shore is nice...but...traffic can be a bitch. The time of year you're going should not be too bad though

Traffic has been so much better since they put that bridge and extra roundabout in. A lot of people were skeptical but it proved to be quite successful.

You nailed it. Book it. If it fits the dynamics of your family. Some can’t afford that. It’s a remote for Tahoe but not that remote. Some very nice destination restaurants nearby. And not far to Tahoe city. For shopping and walking

The other desirable spots are Tahoe vista. Carnealian bay

Ohh justbook that one. Looks like it’s across the road from the lake. - a problem there. Lot’s of cars 40 mph during the day. Dead silent nights

I know that house. I think it’s the beach where the bear got shot. Big controversy about that. I would have thought that house would rent for 2000 a night. Again nice spot. Old house. Updated?

You will have to rent a couple cars. Assuming you fly into Reno. Look into renting a boat for a couple days from Homewood marina. Or obexters. 500$. Ish. A day? Gas is expensive

Definitely reasonable for the number of people and the private beach and pier access.

You’ll be fine with one car if you have any bikes - the paths along that entire stretch are great.

Nope, the folks probably aren't going to do much biking. They'll have five driving up from San Diego, though, so I imagine they might be taking two cars.
