No surprise private equity is behind it.

^^^These guys also bottle under the Arrowhead label. They wanted a deal to take 100million gallons per year from a spring in the Columbia Gorge. The locals fought back and after ten years the state of OR refused to issue them a permit.

Did you know that the biggest cost for water bottlers is the packaging?

Yup. And they have been in another big dispute over millions of gallons water they've been taking from springs in the San Gabriel Mtns despite their permit being expired.

Not surprised packaging is their biggest expense when their product is free and requires no manufacturing aside from testing (maybe?)

Edit... looks like the CA water resources board recently ruled against them.

Good for the public. Setting aside the diversion issue, single use plastic bottles are not a good use of resources

At the bottom of the article you linked is another one from 10/27 that sez the company is suing to overturn the decision. That article is paywalled and I can’t find anyone besides LA times covering the issue

I always thought it was the transportation cost to the end consumer.

My assertion was based on comments from the CEO of H2OWater (the guys at Opal Springs),
Product is priced FOB ex-works, so not part of bottler’s cost.
No doubt transport cost is high in the overall supply chain.
