Recommend me an new car in 2022

I want a Transit Connect for the space and efficiency but they're sluggish at best, don't have decent clearance and they're fwd. The other option is the go just about anywhere and never worry about capacities, Chevy Express AWD. Spacious, tough and relatively easy to service but you'd be hard pressed to do better than 20mpg.

All fair critiques, but driven with a minor amount of skill and scorn for resale value you can go pretty much anywhere there are roads. Once things become trails, you're screwed, but I've camped a lot of places where the only other vehicles were lifted trucks/suvs. I just had to pick my way in more carefully than they did.

Here's a picture of the type of place we find ourselves a lot. It's not bad, but you have to watch for rocks/ rutted lanes as you can't straddle much. The Transit Connect does have short front/rear overhangs though and that helps a lot.


But at the same time I would have explored farther down this particular road if I had a more capable vehicle. We were pretty far out and I didn't want to find myself stuck if larger ruts emerged or things got unexpectedly sandy where I couldn't carry any speed. Still, for right now it's not a bad tradeoff. I'd love a next gen Transit Connect on the Maverick platform though.

Just traded my 2015 4Runner with 137K for the new Outback Wilderness. They gave me $31K for the Toyota, much to my surprise. It was my second 4Runner and though they served me well I drive 20,000 miles a year and I was sick of the shitty mpg and sluggish performance.

Please keep us informed on how you dig the Wilderness. Kid going to college in 2 years, taking wife’s current Outback and sights set on a Wilderness for the Mrs.

Buddy had a 2017 Taco, just got the new TRDPro 2022. Really really nice truck.
But the seats are still not that comfortable to ride in for hours. I couldn’t buy one.
There’s much better vehicles out there for that kind of money imho.

We like our Mazda CX-5 turbo. Decent room and great power. Rides nice. Carbon version is good balance if you can find one

You should buy a miata. Lift it (https://www.flyinmiata.com/default/lift-kit.html). Turbo it. Add a roll bar. And put a roof top tent across roll bar/a pillar. A pair of blizzaks for winter and bobs your uncle.

Just bought an ND for the lady as she had had an NA when we were dating. She let me put a turbo in it and that’s when I knew she was the one. It’s still a fun car. More solid now. The NA was a bit flexy.

I've never owned a vehicle that had any sort of resale value when I was done with it anyway. Is that the plan, to put it on the Maverick platform? I want one.

I've owned my NA...for 20 years now. Bought it as my first car at 16.

But damn is the ND2 tempting. I have a feeling the NA and ND will both be iconic in 50 years. NA as the first and most analog. ND2 as a return to NA form with 30 years of refinement and the last of the ICE, manuals.

My pops had a 95 NA. That was a fun car to rally up and down the cottonwoods in the summer. Just enough power to get around the corners and small displacement such that you really had to wring it out and learn how to row gears. It was all fun and games until my brother ran it into the side of the garage.

Did not read every post in this thread, but how about the new Bronco Sport ?

Young TRG phenom StealYourFace has one and I really like it. Turbo for good performance at altitude, mpg in high 20’s sometimes low 30s, fold flat seats, based on the Escape platform for reliability but with a much better 4WD drivetrain. I was really impressed with his.

That was the rumor last year. Moving production to the Hermosillo plant where the Maverick/Bronco Sport are built and move it to the same C2 platform. The Maverick has a very similar cargo capacity to the current Transit Connect and the 2wd Mavericks have a similar twist beam rear suspension setup as the TC's do, so I can see it as possible, but who knows if it will come off. I haven't read anything new about it, but it's also not a car that really inspires online chatter.
