Damn, can be found for $299 right now. That’s less than I spent on groceries yesterday.

I've found that edge high = skis that are hard to ski in dense snow ( due to release characteristics being off) when ease is kinda paramount, but by all means - try em.

I've had too many days (too many = >0) messed up by bad tunes, so my base assumption is that a ski is meant to be skied with a standard tune - flat bases and appropriate base bevel - not whatever tune it happens to show up with.

To be fair, that convo might have happened in another volkl thread.

I've tuned enough skis to know what I want. I don't assume new skis will be flat but I damn well expect it. And If I'm buying top shelf factory skis, I shouldn't then have to pay for a base grind...

The whole point here is that I want flat skis for tuning simplicity but if making them flatter means losing performance, then that's a poor tradeoff. And obvi, nobody WANTS edge high, but if it works better than expected then I'll stick with it, lest I fuck it all up.

Does anyone have recommendations for the mount point on OG 184 Katana's? Seems like people like the 191's at around +2, but there isn't much info on the 184's.

Height and weight help answer that question. I always went one the line, but wouldn’t have a problem going +[emoji637].

Both of my Moment Deathwishes came from the factory edge high in the tips/tails. Enough that it's annoying waxing them. Both ski great, so I've left them alone. I'll be curious to see the effect when I do finally grind the bases.

I skied 184s on the line and 191s +1. Loved both there. In my top 5 favorite skis of all time.

Thanks peeps. Probably will shoot for +1, although I'm curious if a +2 will make it semi playful. Or that could just be trying to make the ski something it's not.

My 2014 came with marks for +1 and +2 so I think Volkl was obviously ok with some variation on mount point… I ended up +1 after skiing on ze line for a while. I don’t think moving mount point much will make these “playful”... A ski like this wants me to Stand and Deliver, thankfully. Love them.

Got on my 191 Katana 108s today. Did not love them nearly as much as I remember from last season when they were my "daily drivers".. Some larger, funky refrozen moguls had my legs pretty tired on them, and I was wishing I brought out Wildcat 108s that I have been "daily driving" recently. Or better yet full rocker Mantras, which slither around in coral reef bumps like it's their job.

When I got the Katanas into more open terrain and groomers, I found them wondering around a bit and even less predictable than I remember (I thought their one flaw was 3D radius predictability at speed). I also couldn't vary the turn shape as much as I remember from last year, nor as much as Wildcat 108s. Katanas felt locked into a 20m radius unless I flat based.

If I recall correctly, the Katanas took me a solid 4 days to really click with, but then I loved them. Maybe I just have to ski them more to figure them out again. The sidecut and fat tips had me wishing for something else. Could be that I've been skiing more progressively mounted skis a lot lately, and not adjusting quickly..

Compared to Sender Squads, the Katanas have a stiffer, longer tip that is easier to lean into, and are definitely more precise. Squads feel noticeably stiffer underfoot, overall more damp (except on landings where I find Squads to feel like full rocker skis [no camber shock absorption], just like BO118s), and feel more like a big mountain ski vs the Katana feeling more like an all mountain ski. All expected. I haven't gotten the Squads into really funky, big, refrozen moguls to compare, but I don't think they'd be any better.

I had the old Katanas,a few pairs, and now I'm on the k108.

I love them everywhere but bumps, where they are somewhat hard to ski, probably because they are so stiff, plus they have a pretty wide shovel.

I got to the point last year where I started enjoying K108s in bumps. I actively seek out bumps a lot of days, so my "daily driver" has to be at least decent in them. Gonna need more time on them to re-figure them out.

I definitely prefer the old Katanas, which were in my top 5 favorite skis of all time. Even when I was jiving well with the K108s, I much preferred the old ones.

Have you tried the OG M102 in a 191? It’s got a bigger radius under foot versus the K108 and the transition between the various radii feels more seamless to me. They ski stiffer and are less forgiving, but they don’t make me line for the old Katana. They feel nearly as serious of a ski.

    All Things Volkl Thread

And forgot to mention, I scored some one ninety one Revolt one fourteens during BF. Looking forward to getting them out at Whistler-Blackcomb once the alpine is all opened up.

Re the 20m radius turn, I didn't know I was doing this, but the other day on ZF116s, after skiing Katana 108s more than anything else the last 3 seasons, I noticed I was skiing the front third of the arc, and then making a larger than normal aft adjustment, basically skipping the middle third, and skiing the back third to finish the turn. I must have 'learned' to do this to open up the arc, as I much prefer skiing large radius turns at speed. Once I realized it, I started just standing on the ZF, and then naturally moving my weight fore to aft through the turn, and was kinda laughing at myself that I'd been doing that for three seasons without noticing. Middle third is good for emergency maneuvers though. Been splitting time on HL 95 Comps, which slay cord, and VWKs for walks. Both fantastic skis for their intended purpose. Food for thought...or not. Cheers man.
I was just about to send you a message. Coming off of progressive mounted long radius skis so far this season, -7 through -4, it's definitely a stance thing mixed with 3D radius. I wasn't driving them hard enough through the big bumps or the vibration inducing off piste conditions, but then was driving them too hard on piste. I haven't been on directional skis yet this season, and I was loving it a bit too much on groomers where it's easy to get on the front of the ski, and I actually washed them out a bit (not quite over the handlebars) trying to ski them like Pro Riders.

Will put more time on them and figure it out.

I haven't tried the M102s. I coulda bought Brys pair, but can't get myself to buy another 3D radius ski. I was getting into the idea of M6 Mantras this summer, but decided against 3D again.

Did you also get Revolt 121s? I was thinking about those for $300, but really want a softer, more directional version of the same thing. 3D radius worries me less on a ski like R121s. The stated radii are much closer together too, and they just seem like "normal" skis.

Three in a row. Triple hatter.

191 M4 Mantras absolutely slayed big refrozen low tide moguls today. I wish I could find a new ski that was extremely similar. Full rocker at 100mm, 190 true length, 27m radius, edgy Volkl feel.

Well I fucked up. Bought my kid some 165 Revolt 96s last spring on closeout and finally got around to getting them mounted last weekend. In the holiday hustle I forgot to measure the factory mount point and just had the shop mount on the line. When I picked them up I immediately thought they looked really forward. Finally measured today and they straight taped 163 and the factory mount point measured 81.5. Dead center, WTF?!

Obviously my fault for not checking, but I never would have fathomed that an all mountain ski would have a factory mount point that forward. Factory defect maybe? Goddammit, there's $45 I can't get back. Maybe the shop will take pity on me.

Thoughts on how far back to remount? -3 cm?

I went from M4s to M6s. In my experience the M6s retain the all mountain versatility of the M4s, while being an obvious step up when I’m getting my carve on. I’ve never given much thought to the 3D radius thing, they just make all the turn shapes I want, so I’m stoked.

These are the '24 model. This is the description from Evo:

"A proven winner in the all-mountain freestyle category, the Völkl Revolt 96 Skis provide enough guts to slay serious terrain on the upper mountain while still having enough tail rocker to stomp a park lap every now and then."

Certainly not how I would describe a "park" ski.

edit: it appears I'm responding to a deleted post, but I'll leave this up for reference anyway.

My bad, I was wondering if there was a difference between the 24 & 25. I fat fingered it and accidentally posted before I was done.

Encouraging to hear about the ski essential review Sylvan mentioned though.

    Bummer, and good luck man!

Thanks! Would have been nice of them to have "Park" and "AM" lines.

Now I'm questioning whether this is even the ski I want him on, but I guess I should have him try them out first.
