    All Things Volkl Thread

Aaah early Sept. That time of year when I buy shit that I don’t need.

I’m looking for a heavier, centerish mounted pow ski >120mm….again. I had some 180cm Armada Magic J’s in this slot last year but they felt “short”? I have some unmounted Pon2oons (which measure K2 long like a 181) that I’m sure won’t feel short at -10cm and I’m sure I’d love the Pon2oons in the super deep, but I’m more of center mounted skier and last year’s Volkl Revolt 121’s are now $499CDN up here. That’s like $365US.

Any shorter guys (5’7”, ~170 lbs) skiing the 184cm R121? Assume they ski pretty short at -2.8 rec with all the tip/tail rocker. Likely they work well at -1 cm too. I know I’ve answered my own question but would love to hear other comments about these skis.

I am 70/175 so no clyde, and only have a few runs on R121s at -2. They skied well.

While I cannot remember too much from the few runs I did on the R121s I do remember them not having the same "I want to be skied in this one position" feel that I felt the Whitewalker 116s had mounted at recommended. Meaning that it kinda felt like the tails wanted to sink in or punch into the wind affected soft snow I was skiing them in instead of wanting to stay on top if my weight got aft of slightly forward of center. I suspect that that feeling is less prominent or might even dissapear on the Sammy line, if at the cost of float. I switched to Lotus117s after a few runs and the snow that felt kinda weird and unpredictable all of a sudden became super easy to ski. I would not be terribly surprised if Magic Js kinda have some similar traits - they are both mustachio rockered skis that are strong underfoot with softer tips / tails. I cannot recall any other ski feeling the same way in soft snow.

R121s did look kinda unfamiliar with so little ski with so much taper ahead of me, but again - they skied predictably and well.

I would personally opt for ON3P Jeffrey 118s over R121s

Sorry if this has been mentioned before. How do you get that stock tune feeling back into m102s? I just dug those skis from the factory and they lost their luster after a late season tune last year..

Someone mentioned the same earlier, but can’t really remember what the consensus was.

Volkl has bevel specs on their site.

Has me worried though. Rationalizing buying a back-up pair

I don’t know the magic number, but my history would say more towards a 1.5 base than towards a .5 base.

    I don’t think it’s a tight tune. I think it’s quite loose.

Bu that’s just like, my opinion, man.

I think I listed a private fb group before. They were still showing up for me so I reached out to the seller. I have his number if folks don’t bother with fb. Here is perhaps a viewable listing

The Dukes max at 28.5, before that he had dynafit rotations at 29.5.

Almost identical situation for me. Tips were a bit edge high, tails too but less so.
Decided to get them flattened and it wracked the factory tune.

Not horrible by any stretch but decidedly not the effortless ski that it had been.

I will say that I failed to round out the tuning at first. I still needed to re bevel bases and detune tips and tails.
    I did and that helped.
I feel fairly confident they can be brought back around, just gonna take some time and experimenting.

That was me and a few others here.

I think base bevel was 1.5+/-

I just bought a back up pair but as we discussed earlier, there's no guarantee that it'll be identical. Close, yes. The same? I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Not addressing the tune after the grind was on me so my dismay could be somewhat unfounded.

I think you're right on the number and if it is an overall loose tune, that would explain why I liked it right outta the plastic.
    With a slight detune.
I prefer a strong detune and chose to go easier on the 102's and was so pleasantly surprised at the easiness of the ski, but with more grippy edges than I usually run.

Looked around and haven't seen much mentioned about it. Has anyone got time on the new Blaze 114's yet? Current quiver is M108 (184), K108 (184) and some gen1 Blizzard Spurs in a 190ish that I basically never use.

RIP BMT109 - so weird that they are no longer offered. So get them while supplies last - they can usually be found at steep discounts over in Euroland (prob why they have been discontinued - sales being low, but then again they are so pricy that they still are expensive at 20-50% off).

I must admit to being torn between getting some back up pairs or just getting a second pair of ON3P BG108tours instead (stupidly sold my first pair). BG108tours is the only mid-wide touring ski I've tried that is as good and in some cases better than BMT109s.

I've not tried them myseelf, but everybody seems to like them for what they are. They should be dead easy to ski (wide shovels and lots of ski taper, pretty much flat underfoot with long gradual rocker zones, light weight, mount point far back), if nowhere near as chargy as the new revolt114. So prob kinda like a full rocker ski, just a bit more predictable on hard snow if prob also more hooky / prone to deflection (wide shovels, low weight) in variable.

The 114 was only unstable when I ran them flat, no troublesome hooking in at least the soft chop with decent speeds. That damned 3D sidecut magic. Mind, they aren't exactly featherweight, 184's 2kg; 194 north of that. Side profile's photographed pages back. Good compliment to other 3D Volkl's, recommend sizing up if quiver'd for powder. Mount same spot as those skis, with +1 an option if on the line to loosen up.

Stupid easy to use, a reserved user could daily them in high pressure. Definitely dad's powder ski.

    I’m 6’4” 230lbs:
They’re the shit, but a little light and mostly rockered so they can get knocked around in variable snow, particularly the firm kind. They’ll won’t fold up on you, but they have trouble holding a line. Smooth groomers are real fun to carve at high edge angles. Really though, they actually ski phenomenally in pow, although they’re too short and skinny to hit drops at speed. Shovels hold up to nose butters, tails have a nice flex to them and the rocker makes tail butters doable, the tip and tail taper is just right, and all that comes together to make a really nice park ski, from packed pow to the slush. They spin easy and surface swap tubes real easy too. I also recommend you try to nollie on them. They will launch you and no tip catch risk really. First ski I haven’t been disappointed in for a long time. It makes really sensible compromises if you’re still trying to jib.

Tried to search. But came up empty so if this answer is there please point me in the right direction. Are there any changes to 23/24 Vwerks Katana besides the tapering of the tips and tails. Like did they move mount point forward or any other big change?

Apparently the tip and tail taper was a rumor and the only change is actually the loss of the hole in the tip.

yup, it seems like Evo got a bit carried away on the tapering thingy. It will be interesting to see how long they keep it going, especially now with the exit of thee BMT109. The skin attachment mod can't be very costly.

I haven’t ever seen the old one in person, but the 2024 model pic on the website sure looks more tapered than I remembered the old model looking. But my memory could easily be wrong. Thanks all.

The word at the shop is that this season's M series skis were softened up a bit.

Another set of skis getting softer for the masses. Glad I got in on them when I did.

Soft means nothing. Blackops are soft, they are still quite demanding and a hanfdul. If a ski can be easier to use and not trade off performance why whinge about it? Save final judgment for after some runs on them.

Blaze 106 with Alpinists, Trab Vario or a good ATK might be a very good touring option for my needs. Wish I could try a pair.
