    Concert Prices

Holy hell what is happening to concert prices... We are going to a few big shows, including Red Hot Chili Peppers this summer. Even for nosebleeds tickets are a over $100 in a stadium. The fees for the 2 tickets we got were over $160.... ya know.. convenience.

Last Week tonight had a good segment on this:

Then I see the prices for things like https://bourbonandbeyond.com/artists/

We could fly there, get a room for a few nights, get to see some family... for about the same price...

Not sure why that's so cheap.. but ticket prices are generally getting out of hand.

That's why I've gravitated back toward shows in small-to-medium sized venues where you can purchase tix from the venue sans "convenience" fees...

We went to our first indoor show in 2 years a few weeks ago.. it wasn't this bad for tickets, but that was a local venue with a smedium act.

Most spots around here (Reno, Sacramento) waive any fees if you purchase the tix at the venue box office...
And the super small venues usually don't slap "convenience" fees on to the ticket price. They will, however, usually add $5-10 to the ticket price day of show/at the door...

Didn’t watch the JO clip but…

    - Artists don’t make shit from streaming services, so their cut for live music has gone up.

    - Venues sat empty for 18mo, so they have to makeup revenue.

    - Conglomeration of venue ownership means more overhead, more greed, more fees.

I saw an interesting FB post yesterday from a former Ticketmaster marketing guy on how their dynamic pricing works, and how the early bird tix set the baseline based on clicks and clickthroughs. Pretty fucking insidious. Fuck Ticketmaster.

Here’s an oddity: GBA is playing this month in Oakland and a casino in crystal bay, nv for $30. I paid more when I saw them in SF over 16 years ago. Of course, I paid way less when I say them many times in San Diego. (Peeps should go see them in crystal bay!)

Re artists.. yeah, I get why more bands are always touring. Doesn't make $800/show for a couple in a stadium feel any better.

A lot of these venues are doing just fine... the smaller ones I have sympathy for... the arenas and stadiums... less so.

Re greed and fees.... go check out the JO clip... it's really funny.

You missed the $7.95 convenience fee at CBC...
Though with current gas prices, that's what it would cost me to drive over there to purchase tix to avoid the service fee...

SCOTS are coming there in June.
$20 advance / $25 Day of Show (plus tax and ticket fees).

I really wish venues would just post the actual, final price with all the surcharges, taxes, and convenience fees tabulated rather than sucking you in with the ultimately false initial price...

Most of the shows I go to are in a friend's back yard or living room. The price has recently shot up $5 tp $25. but beer is included and all the money goes to the musicians after the sound system rental is paid for. The host does usually get a free guitar lesson, but then the musicians sleep in his house.

I saw Anders Parker at some guy's house in Reno a few years back.
    Got the tix via Undertow.
    https://undertowshows.com/
I think it was $20 and no service charge.
Brought my own lawn chair and sat within spitting distance of Anders.
The host allowed you to bring your own beer and food, too.

Given the pentup demand, why shouldn’t they make money?

arenas and stadia lost a whole lot of business over the shitdemic too

Yeah fuck that noise. The recent dead and co onsale had consumers paying egregious fees for the band’s presale tickets. I’m not playin this stupid game - money talks and my money is talking from my pocket for the foreseeable future.

Nobody said they shouldn't make money. I'm saying some of these shows seems like they are printing it though.

not disagreeing, but like lift tickets unless you vote with your feet it doesn’t matter. Just looked up the price of a DBT ticket near me and it’s $30+$10 handling for a shit venue (a brewery). Six years ago I paid $25+$6 for a real venue. Which is too say - if you want “the best” you gotta pay. Lesser acts aren’t bringing in the $$

DBT's will probably be way more fun in a 'shit' venue than a 'real' one. The closer and weirder the better.

We have found that if you sign up for the fan club of whatever band you want to see, you get some pretty good early bird "deals".

We are extremely lucky to have a friend's brother who is head of security at the big Amphitheater here.
You buy a lawn ticket and then trade him for Pit or front row.
We try not to abuse that, but man it is pretty sweet.
