Neither but Garvey pretty consistently in the discussion among the best in the league year in and year out.

Rolen…didn’t do enough to warrant any discussion in pretty much any year. Until the nerds came in and convinced people he was an all-time great of the game.

It just shows the different way to look at things. Does he pass the very subjective “Does he feel like a Hall of Famer?” test, or do his stats objectively qualify him?

In today's era, nobody would call Garvey one of the best in the league, we know better now. The fact that in a different era, people didn't have the evaluative tools or knowledge we do now, doesn't really make for a strong argument.

And defensively, Rolen absolutely was talked about as one of the best ever, while he was playing.

He was a solid contributor to good teams. HOF? Guess it depends who you ask.
