I’ve said before, I’m a small hall guy. The best amongst peers. In 2001 exactly 2 voters thought mussina was the 5th best pitcher in the league. Not runner up. Not even 3rd. But hey Mark Mulder had a hell of a year.

Glavine was the best pitcher in the NL twice. Won 300 games. And they were a dynasty partly because of him. Unlike Mussina who joined a dynasty and rode it into the ground. If he wasn’t 5-7 in the playoffs with the Yankees maybe I’d think different.

moose edges glavine in war, era+,so/bb but they’re pretty much the same pitcher minus a couple of awards, one of which i linked above in which he had a better season than clemens in every way except win loss. so you want to penalize him because he spent half his career in baltimore instead of dynasty atlanta? just say if he or mcgriff kicked your dog already.

Yeah, the notion that Glavine is an easy HoFer but Moose should just be in the Hall of the Very Good is ludicrous. Other than awards and wins (both flawed stats) there is not any metric where Glavine has an advantage. And Mussina has him beat in career WAR even considering the fact that Glavine has over 900 more IP. And I am no Mussina fan and no Yankee fan.

most k’s on that list, fewest walks. missed leading innings by 2/3. best war. best win probability added. most voters looked at win loss and there were three 20 game winners and an 18-6 while he went 17-11, hence 5th. Fuck the voters.

There are so many stats to make the argument.

I realize that WAR is an imperfect metric, but it's the best "one size fits all" metric we have.

Seasons in the top 10 of WAR for pitchers:
Moose 11 (1st 1x, 6 other times top 5)
Glavine 6 (1st 1x, 4 other times top 5)

If you like a more traditional state like ERA...

Seasons in the top 10 ERA
Moose 11 (7x top 5)
Glavine 8 (5x top 5)

A slightly more advanced version of ERA, Fielding Independent Pitching, times in the top 10
Mussina 12
Glavine 6

The only thing Glavine has over Moose is hardware.

I’m honestly beginning to wonder if the Fenway Sports Group is out of money, and doesn’t have the cash to pay for guaranteed salaries. Like maybe they had all their cash in FTX or something.

Over the years FSG has been criticized a bit and yea they’re aliens. But I never really questioned their commitment to winning or $. And I’m not sure that’s changed. Maybe it has but I don’t think they’re afraid of spending just yet (maybe them hiring bloom is the biggest evidence of that but I don’t know).

But some of the contracts and thought process on names absolutely stinks. They did this in the past but made up for it with a couple good signings over a few years, and a good homegrown team. Seems like now their last big signing was…Chris fucking Sale (aka the ghost of Jon Lester).

Need a dose of reality over there.
