Top 5 that aren’t made any more? I have a list of 2 that aren’t made that I’d buy/ski over todays offerings:
1) 194 Kastle MX 98, the second version, cherry tip. I’d buy 10 pairs tomorrow if Kastle made another run of them, and I’d never have to worry about narrow skis for the rest of my life. You can legitimately get 300-500 days out of a pair, I know of a pair of 184s that have over 800 days between 3 owners. Yeah I’ve been digging the R9 lately, but the 194 MX98 and I just get along perfectly
2) 193 Volkl Shiro, first pow ski I clicked with, it’s a charge hard inbounds all day ski, nothing fancy, I grabbed a pair last winter for a day and they felt like an old shoe, just right in all the spots, but could use a refresh (aka wax and tune). They could make the fat ski of a two ski favorite skis of all time quiver. In my locker at the resort for two seasons was these and MX98s. Thats primarily what I skied.
3) Rossignol CX80, ok so 3, first stiff parabolic ski that I absolutely fell in love with, the current crop of <85mm wide skis are probably better, but for one Christmas break from college, these and I were tight. Mud Sweat and Gears let me demo/borrow the rental pair just about every day that Christmas break, I felt so bad giving them back because I skied them so hard in fairly low tide NY conditions.

Kill all the telemarkers
But they’ll put us in jail if we kill all the telemarkers
Telemarketers! Kill the telemarketers!
Oh we can do that. We don’t even need a reason
Not sure how a top 5 could be locked in and thinking back on some I skied that influenced me are:
Rossi ST Comp
Rossi Haut Route (first wider ski I tried in deep snow)
Explosiv
XXL
Lotus 120 (early carbon, game changer for me)
Top 5- hard to pick. Skis are like women- they all hold beauty in their own ways... My love with skis and skiing began in the early 90s. The ski that opened me up to the back doors of skiing-lift accessed hike-to terrain was the K2 TNC- the Plake version- black. I had several pairs of them and loved them all. At that time, they were one of the best powder skis available. Then I moved to Taos, NM and the bases of the K2s simply would not stand up to bashing rocks all day on the steeps, so, the evolution continued...
K2 TNC- black- 205s
Volkl P10 RS Super/P20 RS Supers (205s of course)
Volkl Snow Rangers (190 or 200cm)
Line Sir Francis Bacon
Salomon QST 98s (just got a pair and loving them!)
