    Smith Goggles Question and Code?

Looking for new goggles as my oakleys are about done. Love the beta on all things Smith. Any recommendations on a LARGE fit frame and a lens combo that has a solid everyday lens and an awesome low light/storm option? Tried calling smith and was sent to vm. Primarily a goggle for Big Sky….

Looking at the squad xl or the 4d mag. Is the mag worth the extra $$? Again larger fit and lens choice are top priority. Anyone have feedback on their everyday lens and a good storm lens?

Also any code/sale beta would be appreciated

    Thanks fellas!

As far as sizing goes: 4D is slightly large, IO MAG XL is large, Squad XL is very large.

I don't think the 4D mag is worth the money, yeah you get slightly more visibility but I don't think it's worth the price. My favorite for a larger fit is the IO MAG XL, I like the spherical lens (vs squad cylindrical lens), large fit, fast changing lens, and doesn't completely break the bank.

As far as lens go I really like the storm yellow, its the brightest and offers the most contrast for those super fog/storm days. It actually feels brighter than a clear lens. Storm pink is also nice

IMO I/Os are overrated in terms of fit; I've always had better luck with the other, framed designs. Was in the Vice for a long time. Recently changed to a little larger design with the skyline XL Asian fit and I'm pretty happy with it. Using a photochromic lens accomplishes what I need for most conditions. Otherwise I still have the vice with a dark lens for bright conditions.

Edit: also worth mentioning that I hate the stupid clip in the back of most smith goggles. Glad to see their offering more options with just the solid strappy.

Storm Yellow is the best low light lens they make IMO. Any of the sun mirror lenses work well for better vis days. Black lens is for fashion and not versatile enough. I have a pair of NIB black frame Squad XLs with Sun Red Mirror/Storm Yellow Flash Lenses I can't use. Probably can't beat Evo's price with shipping but holler if interested.

I actually dislike the 4D Mag for resort skiing. There is just enough distortion at the bottom of the lens to throw off my depth perception when skiing moguls. For touring I love them, they allow me to do a lot more futzing with my pack and chest pockets and camera such without needing to take my goggles off to see.

For resort skiing I'd recommend the I/O, in your case the XL version. IMO it is worth the extra money for a spherical lens like the Skyline or I/O over the Squad's cylindrical lens, I find clarity and depth perception accuracy much better. I've always been a fan of the I/O as I like having 2-3 lenses around but if you can get away with just one lens then you could save some money there.

Where do you get your extra lenses for the I/O? Straight from Smith?

Awesome info, thanks guys!! Interesting about the mag. Guess I am leaning towards the xl’s. Have seen deals on the Asian Fits….are they larger or whats up with them?

Also thanks for the lens intel. Leaning toward yellow for low light and will avoid the black for everyday.

Any deals out there or codes??

After 2 pair of turbo fans shitting the bed I gave up,

tried some Oakley cuz they are like the Toyota pu truck of goggles right ? not, goggle tint was too dark for me ... Oakley meh

    https://www.xspex.ca/product-page/x-trek

This year got some Xspex, I like the fit works on a big head with glasses, I like the lense tint , the strap has 2 buckles so doesnt get fucked up on goggle clips, it comes with 2 magnetized lenses (yellow and a medium grey) that Qwik swap & clip, it comes in a slim fitting carbon fibre case that fits in my pocket so I take both lenses with me all the time

Logo has a maple leaf in the middle of the " P " so its Canadian eh, my buddies ( canadians eh ) also got em cuz of pro deal from Alpine Canada, anybody who can get the discounts should take a look

so 4 of us got em which is like 1/2 of Canada

about 250$ Can so almost free

And here I was going to say I have some 4d Mags for sale I haven't listed yet. Cloud Grey with Chrome Chromapop and the Storm Lens.

I liked the 4ds, just went with Sweet Protection lid and gogs.

    Smith Goggles Question and Code?

I tried the IO mag xl, the squad xl and the squad mag. I bought the squad mag. Fit is smaller than the squad xl but about the same than the IO mag xl.

I like the gold mirror for bluebird days.

    Thanks everyone!

One more question. Anyone have any experience with the Giro Contours? Felt good when trying on and lens quality seemed great

The chromapop everyday red mirror is great for sunny, partly cloudy and those high, thin clouds that cover the entire sky, days. It's easy for my eyes to make a quick transition from sunny to shaded areas while skiing.

If BZN means you're in Bozeman, then your conditions probably aren't that dissimilar to ours in the Alberta Rockies, BC Interior. While I like my Everyday Green, I find for most of the season the Storm Rose is probably in there 80-90% of the time. Only later in the season when the sun is higher do I contemplate pulling out the EVGreen more.

FWIW, our local Smith rep who spends most of his time in Fernie (major low light conditions) will always promote the Storm Rose over Storm Yellow. The Yellow may allow more light in, however in theory the Rose should offer more contrast. I haven't tried the Yellow myself for a long time so can't comment.

I have the Squad XL, with everyday green and storm rose Chromapop lenses. Love both lenses and the goggle in general. The everyday green is surprisingly versatile too.

The lenses can be changed in seconds and they have a super wide field of view. I have a large head so they work great for me.

I mostly use the chroma pop sun black gold mirror (i am in Tahoe). I tried the low light one that came with it (storm rose?) on cloudy days and did not like it as much. I found that it had less contrast. Maybe I should go with an everyday for these days.

    Yes.

RE: Asian fit - tried both the I/O MAG XL in both fits and the difference was negligible. If you can find a deal on the AF, I suggest giving them a try.

I am not asian, average-sized schnozz.

Supposedly the Asian fit works well for high cheek bones too. There’s a bit more foam on the nose bridge so they don’t slide down as easily. I’ve got a pair on order, we’ll see….

Squad XL are great, I've been using them for several years and haven't ever wanted something else. Lens changes are pretty easy once you get the technique down, they fit close to the face, and the field of view is great. I got a new pair for ~$80 on ebay with two lenses, I don't think you could go wrong for that price.

Jumping in on this as I've been having a lot of issues with my Line Miners and old Spys. Leaning towards the I/O Mag XL as well. I think the 40% off codes only seem to get thrown around in summer?

I would agree with that statement. Extra foam formed a better seal in my comparison between the two.

OP asked about the Giro Contours last February. You are absolutely right about the lens quality. Made by Zeiss in the former E., Germany. They used to make the high end lenses for Nikon.

I have those goggles and love them. Searching for another pair in case I fuck up the pair I have.
