It’s eerily quiet in the house today.

The two kids havn't been gone 24 hours and I've already set up the other bathroom for myself. No longer waiting for the wife to finish getting ready for work or.. anything..
I got my own fucking bathroom til Thanksgiving.
I also set up an alternate WFH station in one of their rooms.

My office is gonna move upstairs from the basement to thing#3's room.
Oh yeah. Darling daughter's room was converted into an office real quick.
I was thoroughly disappointed by the lack of contraband found in either kids rooms when I went in for the sweep after they left. I know they've been exposed to such things on the regular too..

t-minus 24 hours...![]()
Whelp, this. Now they want $4200 for a full rebuilt tranny. I have no way of knowing if they simply fucked it up more working on it. But $4200 is cheaper than anything else comparable. Car looks mint, awesome stereo, fully functioning A/C so they got us cornered. I'll help him with the other 1200+

Kid 3 schlepped off to uni...

Did they pull the unit already ? If they haven't you might call around and shop for a transmission shop with a good reputation but honestly they'll all be expensive. IF it's a general repair shop(current shop) they're just going to send it out for rebuild. I doubt you're getting a reman crate unit for $4200 installed.
The car is 1200 ,miles away from me. And they're now down to $3750. We both work full time and he's a full time engineering student. We ain't got time to shop around. Ya the local Midas is likely farming that job out. But, it's all we got. If we had time to shop we'd be trading it in on a different car.
And ya we do suspect they may have fucked it up worse trying to to do just the torque converter assembly.
It's clear they are in over their heads there but we will roll the dice and hope to get back a fully functioning vehicle next week

Just sell it and buy the kid a bicycle.

My 19 year old daughter is paying for her own FUKIN' apartment this year.. because it's only 15 miles away from our fucking house. But 2 years of community college is easier on us all. We're planning on paying for 4 years of Div 1 college room and board (Masters?) when she finishes the associates next summer.

My wife keeps talking about kids having cars for college. Fuck that shite.
I rode my mtb all year. Even made studded tires.
Cars can get kids in trouble.
Good call on the local community college.
And good on her for renting an apartment.
I don’t get the modern millennial living in the basement.
Gtfo. Live your life
Counterpoint. Thing#2 lived at home Jr year and will be living at home Sr year at UVM. 30 minute commute. It's significantly reducing his debt load. He wants to GTFO. He also wants less debt. The money he's made in the summers has taken a good chunk out of tuition. I'm happy to help him and for now happy for him to use a vehicle we own.
Uggh. Thing one dodged a bullet. UU for the win
Thing two?
Fack. So smart. Deserving more than we can afford. But seriously considering raiding my long term retirement strategy to get him to a great school. At least he’s focused. For now. But what if he drops out to ski bum? And I’m deep into tuition.

Oh we can do that. We don’t even need a reason
Can't quote the right post, but what schools is Thing Two considering? What does he want to study? What's the difference in expected cost with aid?I think some expensive schools are truly worth it long term, but it depends on a variety of factors.
Pull all of your money out of retirement and put it into a rental. Go deep into debt, more the better. Clear out your savings. Depending on what you and partner make yearly, there are ways to work the system to get max financial aid. Lots of resources out there to guide you. We were able to get through three years of daughter's Ivy with fat financial aid before the bill came due in her senior year when we ran out of tricks, but what really helped was being employed in Montana where we all get paid in scenery, not money.
Thing two ended up choosing UM over Berkeley.
Both stupid expensive.
I was UM for 8k.
Times have changed.
