The NWAC report regarding the Apr 5th fatality @ MHM is up. Interesting to read the details, highlights the difficulty in locating someone even when they are very close to an area that gets a decent amount of traffic.

Damn... I have skied in the woods above it a lot. Always saw that final chute as a no go.... and headed back to lift. So sad.
thx for posting the debrief doc -- interesting, if grim, reading for any meadows rider
Thanks for that, it was worth reading. The creek is a hell of a trap right there. I haven't skied there but I think I've seen a video of a mag or two almost ending up in the creek somewhere in that area. The report added good context that I didn't have from looking at the trail map.
Thanks for this.
Hard to figure out the guy's route from top of SSX to point of his demise. Most access to that area (at least as I recall) is via HRM chair. Guessing he entered at Jack's, traversed south past Ho Chi Minh and dropped in south of Heather chair?
The lack of trauma or any ice lens around his face is pretty weird as well.
Guess it doesn't really matter now. Shred in peace dude. Condolences to friends and family
^ the few times I have skied that zone, I have approached as you describe, TBS - generally the vicinity of S&R gate. It does seem odd to traverse all the way over there on that particular day and on a snowboard.
It isn't all that often that I notice tracks coming out of those chutes. I wonder if he intended to end up at the top of those, or got enticed by untracked snow in the trees above? Once you are standing at the entrance to those, there aren't many alternatives other than booting up or over to the next chute.
Fucking tragic
He was scanned at the SSX last but the heather chair scanner was down that day. He could have rode the heather lift up and dropped into the lower gate near the bottom of SSX... tragic no matter how it happened.
Don't know why but your comment made me listen to this for some reason...

Difficult to navigate back there. The skiing is great until it isn’t… perfectly spaced, steep old growth, always untracked. I’ve taken the bait a couple times but fortunately have been with partners.
FYI - heard from a reliable source yesterday that MHM has submitted a proposal to officially open their boundaries. They will add additional gates, and some of us won’t need to sneak around as much![]()
That would be excellent. Gates + open boundaries doesn't compute for me. Do they still reserve the right to restrict access under certain conditions? If gates are closed can you still cross a rope line? I wonder if they will increase avy education offerings?
I have almost no experience with the finer points of resorts that have open boundaries.
i'm guessing the whole howitzer hangfire control will influence things...
AFAIK, it's not really open boundaries, more-so that they will have gates into areas that aren't PR or Heather, and you can go wherever you want when the gates are open, but they won't always be open.
Might inspire more people to carry gear
This doesn't make sense. If you're at the top of Patty Cakes it would take a lot of uphill to get back to the Heather lift. Do you mean headed back to HRM lift?
Either way, going into that area alone is just dumb
Me and my son traversed the top of S&R cliffs once. We just traversed farther than Patty Cakes to find a mellower way down, plus I've surveyed that terrain many times while taking the runout and knew the creek was there and could cause problems without adequate snow. We were a fair ways below and away from the Heather lift when we reached the runout and had to be at least 50-100 yards skiers left of Patty Cakes
I stand corrected.
or down White river from the Vista ridge?
You can definitely do that now - exit just below the upper sign board. I have even seen people do the super high traverse over into Clark and boot up the wall of PG to the ridgetop, but that is probably technically verboten. I am guessing these gates might be on the opposite side of the resort, maybe?
dude is from CT?!?
