Ground so saturated my basement flooded. Thankfully when I sheetrocked it I left it 4" off the floor. Floor is just paint. Couple area rugs are going to need some drying.

Biggest issue is it's coming in via the PVC that holds the well pipe into the house. Must either be perforated PVC or have a big crack somewhere. The pipe is easily 3.5-4 feet below dirt. In the 3 years here we have never seen anything like it.
Looks like we are winding down so hopefully no more water. It was filling a 5 gallon bucket in about 4min at it's fastest. Ugh.

Looks like Ida took at minimum of 7 lives so far in NYC. That's a crazy storm. My basement issues mean nothing. Please ignore.

The PVC pipe is likely just a sleeve the foundation guys placed in the forms for the pipe to go through. Dig out any loose material where it comes through and pack it with hydraulic cement.

6" in 24 hours. Got a wee bit of water coming through the foundation where the gutters overflowed and some plants in the garden took it on the chin. Other than that I think we skated through this one. I'll do a better inspection after it dries out a bit. We got lucky compared to a lot of folks down the hill from us that had small drainage turn into raging maelstroms. I know at least 2 people that need a new place to live for a while, one will probably end up with what's left of the property condemned

9 dead so far in NYC, probably some underground dwellers not accounted for. Not a drop bob from Ida, thankfully.

Get used to it. Check out the map below, which shows the change in annual average precipitation in the last 30 years compared to the 20th century. Green is getting wetter. The greenest places in the US more or less follow the path of Ida.

Nah. Most of the deaths were stupid people driving into deep ponds, I'll bet. I once fished a woman out of the Bronx River Parkway who did that. Made it difficult by not letting go of her huge purse/tote bag filled with a few gallons of water. Dumbass.

Just did a reconnaissance drive to scope out my road riding routes and what the damage was. No problem, except for a few low areas next to bodies of water and a few gravel run offs. Zero trees down, which would be the real issue, like it was after that thing last year, whatever it was called. Lots of trees here. Lots. Nice day, actually. Green and lush, 70s.

The reservoirs are quite full, so, when all of you people have to flush your toilet out west and the taps are dry, or want to wet the roof before the fire comes, send me a plastic jug for some clean, pure water, with a return label, and I'll hook you up.

Compare that to population growth and real estate appreciation. We are suicidal.

Oh, whoops, sorry. Not stupid drivers.

    From the NYT:

"When rain inundated New York City on Wednesday night, turning streets into rivers and flooding subway stations, officials sounded a desperate warning to keep residents safe: Stay inside.

Still, most of those New Yorkers who lost their lives during the floods were found inside basements, after water poured into homes from the streets and through the windows. On Thursday, when the city’s death toll reached 12, police officials said that 11 of the dead had been found in basements in residential homes.

A severe natural disaster has the potential to make any place unsafe. But the death toll from the storm on Wednesday also highlighted the unique, shadowy world of basement apartments in New York City. Tens of thousands of people, many of them immigrants or low-income residents unable to afford the city’s exorbitant rents, seek shelter in underground dwellings that are often not legal for residence and do not meet safety or building regulations.

It is not clear whether all of the homes where people died during the storm on Wednesday were illegal units. But at a home in Woodside, Queens, where a toddler and his parents were found dead, a certificate of occupancy shows that the basement had not been approved for residential use.
City records also showed two complaints of illegal basements in 2012 for a Queens home where an 86-year-old woman was found dead. The complaints were closed after city building inspectors could not gain access to the basement."

Not that they are dry, but that they are getting drier relative to what it was like in the last 100 years.
