    low bitterness is a requirement for lawn mower macro lagers, but not quality lagers/pilseners. Anchors now owned by Sapporo, so not a micro.

    Given how many “micros” have outsourced production at one point or another to “macro” brewerys, it’s hard to have a map of which is which. I.e. New Glarus does more in sales now than FX Matt.

    I still have a Weinhard's Red key chain. I enjoyed Icehouse back in the 90's but never cared for Keystone.

    Technically yes, but it was at the end of their run. Barrelhouse Brewing was kinda the leader at that point before the Rhinegeist and Madtree Breweries took over the scene.

    yeah i do remember seeing it but I don't drink molson, back in my marco swilling days it would be Kokanee or labatts

    edit: there was something about canned Kokanee being different than bottled becuz after Kokanee was aquired by Labatts they could make it anywhere but only bottle or can (forget which) in Cranbrook , same recipe but i guess its the water ?

    Oh good gawd. Shiner Bock. I tried to like it when I spent a week in Austin for work. It was too sweet and after two it just hit the palate all wrong. By the end of the week I couldn't drink it at all.

    Correct, but I said Full Sail's Session was sort of the first "lawnmower" craft beer and I still stand by that unless someone can think of another example that was earlier. I don't think Anchor Steam qualifies because it's not low bitterness.

    yuengling for old school, but might not qualify as “craft” despite claiming to be the largest craft brewery in the us.

    for “craft” craft, new glarus spotted cow. They call it a farmhouse or a saison or a cream ale (closer to the latter IMO) but functionally it’s just a higher quality beer.

    the full sail session black was a nice schwarzbiwr, I guess that got cancelled.

    We used to consider Red Stripe a ‘session’ beer that wasn’t total swill.
    And Phil Lesh apparently drank Heinekens as a session beer, all day long.

    LOL. I enjoyed MGD as a nice alternative to Bud Heavy back in college. Guess I'll have to call Rusty if I want some.


    Re: Heinekens, I don't know when "session" beer became a thing, but for as long as I can recall I can down that stuff all day long. Got hooked on it when I was young and in the islands sailing (brewed in St. Lucia) back when it was stubby bottles and tasted better.

    The current best, cheapish, easy drinking macro, imo, is Stella Artois. But only in cans. The bottles are brewed in the US but cans are still brewed in Leuven, Belgium, where its been brewed since 1926. Unfortunately, they have plans to start brewing cans in the US too by the end of this year.

    but yes I do see the quality difference in Anchor vs Lone Star
    They were one of the first “craft” breweries. My original post was in response to someone posting that Full Sail brewed the first craft lager style. Anchor predates that with their Steam beer by like 30 years.

    I don’t find Anchor Steam to be bitter, Liberty Ale yes.

    I just saw people drinking MGD cans but I'm in Milwaukee right now. When I grew up near Chicago MGD was considered a step up from old style. I'm actually sitting at Good City brewing right now and seeing how it's been awhile since I've been back I'm fairly impressed how much the craft(God I hate that word) beer scene has improved. In my youth I was also a purveyor of fine malts liquor such as mickey's ice, St Ides, king cobra, and whatever else we could buy in the ghetto for 99 cents when we were 15.

    Did they have Country Club 40s where you were too? If so that would have rounded out the “large format” selection of the Stop and Rob by our house in undergrad.

    The real gem of the neighborhood was the “Deli” at the top of our street owned by the nicest old, half-blind, half-deaf, man Joey. Joey stocked good beers (read: imports and higher end domestics like Grolsch and Sierra Nevada that you’d find in the waning days of the 90s) and he left the store to a couple of the most likable stoners you could ever imagine who would close down when we stopped in to sell us bags, burn a few in the walk-in and send us on our way with a free 12er or two.

    We’d pop out all goofy and apologize to the regular paying customers lined up outside as we walked back downhill to the house.

    Man that was a great spot to be 19.

    I remember buying a keg of full sail in 91 on a visit to some friends going to Reed. The folks at the brewery got a kick out of my VT DL.

    It depends on what you're comparing it to. It is a whole lot more bitter than standard North American industrial lagers. I think they top out in the low teens for IBU.
