Outboard motor questions

I bought a house on a lake from my mom. It came with a boat with an early 80's Evinrude 90 that replaced a 70hp that threw its guts out of the block one hot afternoon. Insurance refinished the hull a few years ago after it broke free of its mooring. The interior is refinished so although its old its in good shape but the old motor is tired.

I found a 2010 75hp Evinrude E Tec with about 900 hours that was used mainly as a commuter boat on Indian Arm (salt water). It was serviced every 3 years.

It's a 3 hour drive away so i haven't seen it yet. What should i look for? Anyone know of any issues it might have or soon develop?

Asking $4900cad.

BRP has quit making outboards. I'd stay away
Mercury, Honda or Yamaha. I'd even consider Tohotsu

It's not a ton of hours, that's not a big concern. It's very good that it was used regularly. Not sure about the price, seems high-ish? Not sure.

Not too concerned that BRP shut down Evinrude. My experience with my parents was, give it a quick warm up, rev the piss out of it with a skier and park it. It went to the bottom of the lake 2 or 3 times and kept spinning for many years.

Im mostly concerened with the saltwater.

There is nothing on the market for used outboards in the 60 - 90 hp range. A new 4 stroke runs about $12k cad with no prop or controls so $4900 is pretty reasonable.

A carburetor 2 stroke will handle a dunking better than injected. But I've always been a fan of eTec. When I sold a few OB's prices were much lower. In the last 6-7 years, used have gone up drastically

Salt water's not great but not getting used is worse. I wouldn't worry about it too much if there's nothing obvious.

ETEC's are gone, BRP has "pledged" to provide parts for 10 years but pledge is no guarantee. Plenty of good four stroke outboards out there. I have a 2005 115 HP Suzuki that has been bullet proof. Very easy to service, parts readily available, quiet, smooth etc.

It's true that parts availability may be an issue. But you can still get all kinds of parts for old motors so who knows.

I think the 75 HP and under E-Tecs are pretty reliable overall.

When BRP bought Johnnyrude, prices for parts went up considerably, and a bunch went NLA

My etec seized when the oil pump failed. No alarm. Just dead in the water.

That seems like a lot for a 900 hour engine. But everything recreational is crazy expensive.
No boating for me this year. Fuck that shit.

Check the compression on existing motor and if good keep it. Changing props, especially going to a stainless steel prop, can give you a little more performance w/out spending thousands.

Everyone I know or have talked to who has or had the E-Tec complained about all kinds of problems. Evinrude sold the shit out of them then the brand died.

Yamaha/Suzuki FTW IMO, at least for fuel injected.

there was a long article abou tit in one of the outboard mags late 80s which I can't find, but to the effect that mercury used a different horsepower rating system in the 40s/50s that consistently made mercs "seem" faster. i.e. mercury would call something a "10" when it was rated at 16 hp etc. We hated them because we fancied ourselves lucky lowe etc. growing up, mounting Overton pylons in our cheep Glassmaster outboards. The inline "tall" design of merc outboards sucked for the configuration, while the flat V4s of OMC worked beautifully.

Right now, new boat motors are about as rare as a 20 year old virgin. Yamaha's are unobtainable, a few Mercurys and Suzuki's are around.

My friend is having a new Freeman built, needs 4 300 hp engines and can't find them.

Someone is supposedly picking up the BPR line of outboards. Who knows. Biggest question will be the availability of parts. Have a fishing friend with a 2003 90 hp Johnson. Can't find many of the parts for it already.
