Ski work* for skis... We can make something happen this summer. let me know. Same BSL

*Not really necessary but i know you're good @ that stuff
Hell yeah! I have to repair a blown edge for non-mag BillH this summer but I've got plenty of time to give your skis a makeover. Currently mounting up some Freeride pros on a pair of Cassiar 95s for non-mag GaryE. We'll chat after black fly season.

    My Targhee quiver is-
-188 Blizzard Rustler 11s (114 underfoot) for new snow days.
-190 Moment Deathwish (112 underfoot) for everything else.

Both skis are intuitive and approachable, but hold their own really well.

The Rustler 11s are a bit more stable at speed and do better in chopped up resort powder. They carve and pivot in 3D snow, but want to hold and edge and rail on hardpack. They have a bit more rebound energy than the Deathwishes, but are incredibly easy to ski in powder and groomers. They are a bit more work in tight places without new snow, which is why I have the Deathwishes.

The Deathwishes offer incredible edge hold on hardpack due to their triple camber, but they also have an amazing ability to pivot through tight spaces even if the snow is hard. Even though they are 112mm, they are have the best edge hold and carving abilities of any ski over 100mm that I've ever skied. The combo of edge hold when you want it and pivot when you want it is magical. I use them for playing around on soft bumps, railing groomers, skiing sidecountry pow and skiing through tight trees to get to pow stashes a couple days after a storm.

Except for very early season conditions, I have never wished for anything more narrow than the Deathwishes. There was maybe one or two days this past season where I wanted something wider than the Rustler 11s, but IMHO it's not enough of a need to justify a wider ski for your purposes.

It may sound crazy, but many of the people I ski with at the Ghee don't have anything under 110mm. We just don't have bumps or tight enough trees to necessitate it.

There is something to be said for having a wide enough ski to drop into the sidecountry whenever you want, but a ski that still can pivot through the tighter inbounds terrain that we do have. Seriously, check out the Deathwishes- I regret all the years that I skied on other skis.

Lastly, most everyone I ski with has some for of inbounds friendly touring binding on all of their Targhee skis (CAST, Shifts, Duke PTs, etc). I always keep my touring gear in my truck. Depending on who I run into on a given day, I may do a couple impromptu sidecountry laps and it is really nice to never wish for a different ski that is sitting at home.

Good luck with retirement and hit me up for some Ghee laps when you get out here next winter.
Thanks for the beta on skis and the offer to do some turns next year. If you know any folks that are looking to rent out vacation homes in Driggs outside of AirBnB or VRBO, can you PM me? I've paid enough VRBO fees over the last 2 decades....

Right on. Check out this Facebook group for housing- https://www.facebook.com/groups/1522000754687302

VRBOs and AirBNBs are kind of expensive for long term housing- I know someone who came out last minute this winter who is paying $4k per month to rent a 700 sq foot AirBnB condo off ski hill road. It may actually be cheaper to try to get a 4-6 month lease for around $2k per month starting in November or December. Then you could either come whenever you want throughout the winter or sublease for the couple months that you aren't here.

Daily driver for me at the ghee is the Atomic Backland 117 - think a more ‘chargey’ and directional version of the Bent 120. For the seldom seen hard pack days the RipStick 106 come out or I may swap them to their new Black Edition 96s

Interesting...I had the Backland 95s and just didn't click with them. They felt "hollow" to me. To be fair, I never skied them in 3D snow.

Well aware of the cost of short term rentals in Driggs area. I'm splitting the cost with Goniff and we are looking at 3BR places so that EC friends can come stay and help us offset the rent. I was just hoping for a local connection that may know some owners that would be willing to deal outside of AirBnB or VRBO as each of those services takes a healthy fee. Neither of us can stay for more than the 31 nights we've budgeted although we intend to spend some time with Kokomas on one end or the other and ski at JHMR.

did you mention your BSL? we have a decent quiver of Line skis at BSL ~295 in the 180-190's length ranges if that happens to coordinate and you want to borrow anything while out here
So kind of you, thanks for the offer. My BSL is 308 so likely won't work. Looking forward to meeting you guys!

AirB&B gets much cheaper after a month. Many a time a 25-30% discount over 30 days. And the fees amortize over a longer period. Expensive for even a week stay, but, barely noticeable over a month or more.

Volkl Katana 108 or M102 and Praxis Protest for deep days. I prefer my K108 over my Rustler 11 in any type of conditions.

VRBO also has this discount although I don't think it's that much. We're looking to stay 31 nights to also avoid lodging taxes.

I've found that AirB&B is a different market around ski areas. Not entirely, but, not as forgiving as off season Italy.

Oh, and a small ski carry pack for your Mary's Nipple hikes.
haha you aren't old enough for the Targheezers club!

Skis should include something that's at least 112 underfoot, and something narrower for chunder days.

Are you a backcountry skier as well?

EC backcountry, yes. Am taking Avy 1 in the fall and will have gear but I'm ultra-conservative and would not venture out without someone with local knowledge.

That's not ultra-conservative, it's just smart, especially coming from the EC where conditions aren't so prone to problems as they are in the west.

Yo MNIAW, Kokomas told you me you and Goniff were coming out next season, good deal...

Skied with Goniff a coupla seasons ago, look forward to laps wit youse guyse.

    Some thoughts:

I'd put the xtra money in a coffee can and don't touch it. Bring whatchu got as you're comfy with it and it'll work fine.
Skiing may be blower or it may be a dustbowl, ya never know. If it's snowing, demo skis and find a ski you know you like vs. a guess.
Prolly most of us will loan you a huge variety of skis to play on and have connexxions for cheap demos.
Skis are just tools, loaned to friends.
If you find what ya like, buy it or we can snag some for you on sale in the spring/summer.

Lotsa mags here to show you around the edges too. A few may take you in deep.

I also may have a line on a place but it'd be in Jackson, not over in Spudrovia.

Agreed. Sounds like the skis the OP already owns should work fine.

I also live in a region that receives lots of natural snowfall and the longest skis I ever actually use are 185cm.
