your parents said the same thing about rock music vs Frank Sinatra.

I can virtually guarantee you that the best pop artists of today will still be getting played 50 years from now.

ETA: there was a lot of mediocre rock music 50 years ago that doesn't get played today. The same will be true of today's pop music 50 years from now. But the idea that 2020s pop music won't have the staying power that 1970s rock has had is peak get off my lawn-ism.

For shits and giggles I just looked up the top 10 hit songs from 50 years ago:

My Love - Paul McCartney & Wings
Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) - George Harrison
    Get Down - Gilbert O'Sullivan
Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree - Dawn
    Kodachrome - Paul Simon
Will It Go Round In Circles - Billy Preston
Playground In My Mind - Clint Holmes
I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby - Barry White
Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me - Slade
Bad Bad Leroy Brown - Jim Croce

Not a particularly impressive list with staying power, lol.

That's the point. Look at the top 10 list today, also mostly garbage.

We don't disagree, Bunion implied that music from 50 years ago had staying power but current music won't. In reality, the best stuff from 50 years ago had staying power but most didn't, and that is the case today as well. But it is an absolute mistake to think that there is no "best pop music of today that will have staying power".

I get that it is fun to give the mid 50s guy shit for being a Taylor Swift fan, I knew that when I revealed that I was a fan, so I can take it. But I wasn't always a fan. And I listen to enough pop music with my daughter to have some sense of who is just putting out catchy forgettable tunes and who is putting out good music with staying power. IOW, I became a Swift fan because after doing a bunch of (forced) listening to pop music, it's obvious that she is putting out good music with staying power. The old futzes on this forum can choose to disagree, but they would be wrong.

i feel bad now that I made my folks endure constant Michael Jackson (Thriller), Billy Idol, and Night Ranger. At least my kids have exposure to a lot of good stuff (as viewed from my superior opinion) that I force them to listen to regularly.

No, not even remotely that but if that is how you take it, so be it.

Ok, well, were you saying that "good music" from 50 years ago has staying power, but that there is no current pop music that will? I mean this was the exchange, what does this mean if not that?

That seems to be extolling the virtues of music 50 years ago while saying today's music is shit. In reality, lots of music from 50 years ago didn't have staying power and lots of pop music today doesn't either, but there WILL be pop music from today that will have staying power, just like some rock music from 50 years ago did. What am I missing about your statement?

Other than expanding on what you think I said? That there will be "some" pop music that has staying power but Taylor Swift is not a very good example. Please someone, anyone recite 3 lines from one of her songs.

Yeah she can write an earworm and manage to create some catchy tunes. BFD.

My lil Miss had a round of Taylor Swift/One Direction/Miley Cyrus pop that she went through but it didn't get play in the car unless on headphones or outside of her room. I'm sure some of it is fine/good/talented but I avoid it like I avoid country music.

To bring it full circle she got a record player a few months ago for her bday and is getting into vinyl, including picking up ....Dark Side of the Moon.
Move upside and let the man go through...

My teen girls listen to boatloads of good modern music that most of you nerds have no clue about, and yes, they like Taylor Swift too because she is an outstanding talent. Bottom line, Danno is right and the rest of you are wrong.

When it comes to music there is no such thing as being right or wrong.
