Being frm Massachusetts I was a fan of Marvin from way back, back in the days when nobody wanted to fight him and he couldn't get a shot and then all through his career. I personally believe he got robbed in the Leonard fight, but whatever.

The way he walked away and never looked back when he thought he got robbed was admirable. I read a story yesterday that Bob Arum told: A year or so after the Leonard fight, Leonard, Hagler and Arum were all at the same party. Leonoard asked Arum to approach Hagler about a rematch, the box office potential was off the charts, they each would have made millions. Arum walked over and told Marvin what Leonard had asked him to say. Marvin just looked at him and said, "Tell Ray to get a life." and that was that. He had said he was done, and he was done.

In later years Marvin learned Italian and moved to Italy, where he was kind of the Italian Schwarzenegger, in a bunch of action movies. Sounds like a fun time.

Most people seemed convinced that Tommy Hearns would clean the floor with Hagler but I thought Marvin would do it. A lot of people have called this the greatest three rounds in boxing history and I've never seen anythng that would make me disagree with them.

    Watch it again:

    Sorry to see him go.

During covid isolation last year I watched a lot of old fights on youtube from the mid 70s to mid 80s. Not the heavyweights, the flyweight up to middleweights. Now that was the golden era of boxing, and it was on TV every weekend. The speed, balance and conditioning of the fighters was incredible. That's why I can't watch MMA. It disgusts me.

    RIP champ.

After they stopped it in the 3rd Hagler realized he could lose because of the cut. He said it wasn't getting in his eyes and he had no idea how bad it was until that moment so he decided he had to end it and he did.

Watching that again for like the 50th time the adrenaline still pumps.

It’s a victory just lasting that long.

Rip Marvin. Great memories staying up late and listening to that fight on the short wave radio from Chile.
