Nobody thinks they are a danger to humans. At least half of the pushback comes from sportsmens' groups who have seen first-hand the devastating effect wolves have had on wild game populations. Ask anybody who has been hunting northern Idaho for the past few decades--that's what is in store for Colorado. (You know sportsmen, the ones who have entirely funded wildlife conservation in this country for the past 100 years and brought it back from the brink? If you don't hunt, you haven't paid shit to support the effort.)

As for ranchers, anybody who doesn't think ranchers have better things to do than invent imaginary threats to their livilihood, doesn't understand hard work.

Yeahman, wolves play a key role in keeping ecosystems healthy. They help keep deer and elk populations in check, which can benefit many other plant and animal species. The carcasses of their prey also help to redistribute nutrients and provide food for other wildlife species, like grizzly bears and scavengers.

We don't need wolves to keep our deer and elk population in check. Massive development, trail building, an explosion of use of public lands, and a massive uptick in the cat population has basically made elk threatened. If cpw manages to get all 10 inserted, I actually don't give those big doggies much of a chance at all.

They dropped a few off today and there was a very low non Blackhawk or flight for life making passes. I think it's the same dpw one that was doing lack of herd counts last week.
I was at the lynx release back in the early 2000s. I don't think many of them made it or bred.
Wolves introduced into colorado are basically just going to end up road kill.

Man, there's a lot of great sportsmen out there, but pretending like they're solely responsible for wildlife conservation and restoration is ignoring the hell out of a lot of other groups.

He's referring to the funding some hunting and fishing licenses. Its a pay to play system. In Colorado we have a few designations of state owned lands that are in essence reserved for hunting and fishing. In order to recreate their, you needed a hunting or fishing license. Now Parks and Wildlife are merged and their is a big challenge where non-hunters/fishers don't want to pay for access. Its pretty interested to see it go down.

It’s not just licensing, money collected under Pitman-Robertson dwarfs all other sources. In 2022 over a billion dollars was given out to states and territories for wildlife conservation.

Hunters pay for hunting licenses and access fees to hunt managed populations of ungulates and birds. They lament the depredation of ungulates by wolves. What did it look like before wolves were extirpated and there was no state management of wildlife? I get that hunters don’t want competition from wolves but isn’t the interaction between wolves and wildlife part of the natural process? The reason there are bountiful populations of deer and elk around the country is because of the lack of natural predators and careful management of the herds.

As far as ranchers losing stock, don’t most of them get compensation for loss of stock?

Let's see, for starters you have players like Nature Conservancy and a lot of land conservation groups that have engineered land swaps and other deals to ensure wildlife corridors exist (here in NH we have a bunch of regional players). You have specific groups for certain species (I know here we've had some owl and eagle conservators doing some things). Local organizations and municipalities that value natural resources updating land rules. Fed and state governments also do plenty of work outside the direct auspices of hunting/fishing to make lands conserved.
Anti-pollution legislation that helps the landscape regenerate to feed things that feed carnivores. And that's just off the top of my head.
Responsible sportspeople are one of the cornerstones of good conservation and utilization of natural lands, but they are just one of the cornerstones and pretending like all these other things/groups haven't done shit is ignorant.

I’ll agree with you on the Nature Conservancy but those others you mentioned are a drop in the bucket compared to organizations who are made up of 99% hunters and fishermen like RMEF, Mule Deer Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl, North American Foundation for Wild Sheep, Trout Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife……who raise billions of dollars every single year for wildlife and habitat conservation. Not to mention the tens of thousands of donated man hours by the members of these groups to do the projects. When a state fish and game agency spends that Pittman money on a project they reach out to these organizations for free labor. Although I haven’t done it in many many years I have personally donated hundreds of hours of my time doing labor for wildlife conservation. What have the whiny fucks of tgr like ff and luv2suk done for wildlife? Not a god damn thing.

another thing I find funny about this Colorado wolf reintroduction thing is during Covid all the whiny dipshits were crying follow the science follow the science. Now when the scientists/biologist say reintroducing wolves back into Colorado is a bad idea all of a sudden they don’t want to follow the science anymore.

    A good synopsis.

Every time I visit family around the Great Lakes I wish they had wolves there. Deer populations are way out of control beyond any reasonable management because the deer thrive in urban/suburban/no hunting areas. Citizens throw fits over DNR/City/NPS sharpshooters or chemical castration efforts (which I admittedly know nothing about) so you get roadways littered with dead deer from car strikes or sick, fat, cornfed deer populations.
I still call it The Jake.

When voters went to the ballot, there was not a question on the ballot about what CPW wildlife biologists said vs what activists said.

Some people considered their yes vote, but I contend the vast majority did not.

For most yes voters it was a thought of "oooh do I love the concept of 'more natural' nature populated with more cute fuzzies?"

That is why you ideally don't ballot questions like this.

It is misplaced emotion by mostly city dwellers who think wolves are fuzzy cute cartoonish fur friends just like their own fur babies (who would be a nice wolf snack) or noble beasts from a nat geo pic (that didn't include gore). But they don't have to think about it any deeper than that, because they live in the metro and the result for them is dopamine boost from the concept, or maybe even something as concrete as a future insta post from a wildlife photog.

As for the other side, who cares about what a bunch of backwards western slope dwellers think as they are mentally handicapped by their lack of city. Much less, who cares about icky hunters who murder cute fuzzy Bambis and should get their meat from the store anyway like civilized people. And who understands how CPW is funded anyway (until they complain about having to pay to use state lands that were previously free to non-hunters).

I was not saying they don't matter, I was saying they were part of the picture. Most maintenance and conservation efforts here and in my hometown have zero to do with hunting from a funding or volunteer perspective. I've done plenty of shit too and never hunted. Painting with a broad brush on this stuff isn't helpful.

Didn’t the Colorado wolves migrate from Wyoming without benefit of a human-powered reintroduction program? Just like the ones in OR came from Idaho on their own?
