I had to give up on my friend that was crying out for help recently. I kept trying and trying to take her to a meeting but she wouldn’t go. She was too humiliated. She kept drinking and drinking and crying out for help but then she wouldn’t talk, wouldn’t let me take her to help. Then she got all pissed off that I was bothering her and trying to “save” her. So I just decided that I can’t help her and cut her loose - blocked her from my phone. She can do it if she can do it. I don’t have the time or energy to fight with her.
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.

Feel for ya; it’s a bummer. My old GF was too addicted - and all that comes with it - to stay with.

    Congrats!

I'm one of those examples of someone holding down a job, good life, who is an alcoholic. I've been an every day drinker for 35 years. When I used to drink beer I was drinking a 12 pack a night, got gout issues and had to switch to wine. The last year or so I've been drinking even more, I go through 2 boxes of Franzia every 6 days. On the weekends I've been starting at 11am.

I've always kept my shit together, work on time, spend time with the family, etc. Monday I decided I'd had enough, I want to retire at some point and am afraid if I kept up with my habits I'd drink myself to death in short order.

I haven't had a drink since Sunday night, the longest time in 35 years I've gone without alcohol. The first couple days were tough, I couldn't sleep at all. Every time I'd fall asleep I'd go into nightmares, wake up 10 minutes later terrified. Last night was the first night I slept really good.

I'm not sure if I'm done drinking forever. I'm just gonna take it one day at a time and see how it goes. I know tonight will be tough, the first weekend night in 35 years without alcohol.

    Bob,

Alcohol withdrawal is genuinely dangerous, up to the point that it can literally kill you. A week in you're probably past the point where that is still a real risk, but in general heavy drinkers should not quit cold turkey. Benzos (e.g., Valium, Ativan) can be very helpful for relieving the withdrawal symptoms, especially if you don't think moderate drinking/tapering off is an option for you. Benzos come with their own set of risks and pitfalls (they are also addictive and difficult/dangerous to get off of), but are still way better for your health than drinking. Good luck.

Keep it up Bob and the advice above is for real. Alcohol W/D almost killed me. Not something to play around with for daily drinkers.

I’ve been wondering about some of the folks in this thread lately

a friend of mine who used to be a big mountain extreme ski athlete started this place

it’s totally different than any place I’ve ever seen

    lots of outdoor activities

tech friendly - they don’t take all your stuff away - they treat you like an adult with a life, not like a loser

I’ve never been there, but I know it’s different

if you need help you should check em out

hit me up if you need help getting help

Way to keep on keeping on. These past 3 years have been especially challenging! Lots of newcomers and people fresh out of treatment showing up at meetings around here ready to change everything :-) They need old timers like us there for them like we had when we needed voices of sanity.
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

Great job Bob, as said above it can be dangerous to do alone but if you're through 5-7 days you should be good, and thankful.

Don't be afraid to ask for help if you want to keep it up and it gets hard.

Like Bob, I feel somewhat alcoholic. My M.O. is a lite beer with lunch, maybe a margarita before I make dinner. Open bottle of red wine to drink while cooking/with dinner.
Rarely do I just have a beer and then 1 glass of wine with dinner. I am more apt to drink more than less for sure.
Obviously this is bad for me and there is part of me that wants to really curtail what I am doing, but I don't like a weed high that much.
Rather I use sleepy gummies every night to knock my insomniatic ass out.
Valium could take the edge off of not drinking, but am I trading one problem for another?
It sucks because I do like to get a buzz on and booze works for me.
    WWMD?
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

I hate to say it, but you’re probably going to have to start with ‘why’ about liking the buzz.

When I drank more, I would always commit to 30 days sober once a year as a hard reset. Why not start there?

For me, it comes down to not having all the thoughts emotions, mental gymnastics and so on rattling around. I'm free. Free of that voice scolding me, etc. There is just quiet clarity.

If you're rattling around w irritating thoughts etc, just know you can be rid of it. You can achieve peace and quiet.
