What a joke this guy is.

For those keeping score at home, he also got a play at first wrong which was overturned by reply in an astonishingly slow 43 seconds.
he really is bad for the game. legally bad, in fact, as that discrimination lawsuit ruled in the MLB's favor (no shit) citing this:
“The explicit reason MLB offers — that according to Torre, Hernandez ‘has not demonstrated the leadership ability and situation-management skills in critical high-pressure roles on a consistent basis’ — is presented in clear and specific terms,” the judge said.
my man was legally declared a bad umpire. but the rest of the leagues umps don't seem to care and have no interest in him being held accountable or even taking criticism. this is a great read on how fragile he and the rest of em are: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...ngel-hernandez

I read somewhere that umps peak after only like 5 years in the league. Maybe they need a ten year max for these dudes.

Don’t look now but the Royals just had 4 managers and a pitcher tossed for arguing a balk call and the Indians cut the lead down to 1 run.

Let’s see if the Tribe can take advantage.

Right? Don't get me wrong, it was a balk, but the fact that Angel Hernandez made the call after last night's shitshow was just about perfect.

I'm baffled at how either of them still have a job. Where else can you be that consistently inept at what you do as a profession and keep your job? It's ridiculous. The fact that even casual fans seem to know about Hernandez and his idiocy speaks to how truly bad of an umpire he is. I've never been in favor of robot umps, but he's a really strong argument for implementing them.

Streaming CLE sportstalk this morning on the phone and right after the discussion of late inning comebacks by your Cleveland Indians the past three nights to tie for first in the Division was an hour long discussion on does Angel Hernandez actually think he's bad at his job, know he's bad at his job, or is complete denial and thinks that the courts, public and anyone with a brain is clearly wrong and/or out to get him?

This quote from Joe Torre is awesome

"Willie didn't like to wait in the box. He wants you to throw the ball right now. There were times where I'd put a sign down, but I wouldn't put anything down. And Willie would talk to you. He'd say, 'I know what you're doing. I know what you're doing.' It was impossible not to love him even though he scared you to death because he was so good. One time, I tried to distract him by talking to him. I asked him a question at the plate, I don't remember what it was about, maybe about a restaurant, and while answering the question, he hit the ball out of the ballpark. Then he sort of made a half turn to me as he started to first base and told me, 'I'll finish the story later.'"

Pujols released by the Angels. I can finally say I told you so. The GM who signed him paid Albert a king's ransom for his much better years in St. Louis. But, haha, he got fired a long time ago, too. When will these owners ever learn? They should be strapped into chairs and forced to watch Moneyball annually before the winter meetings.

    Say hey!

It's cool that he's stayed a part of the Giants organization. Shawn Estes told a story on the radio this morning. Willie was in the Giants club house during spring training. He was looking at an 8x10 photo of Aubrey Huff (who is a POS, BTW, but that's another story) taking a swing. He sees Estes and says, "Hey. Get me Huff." Estes goes and gets Huff, who's shaving and says, "Willie Mays wants to talk to you." Huff says with a surprised look, "What? Ok." He goes over and Willie gives him a 20 minute critique of what Willie sees wrong in his swing. Guy had great talent, but he is also a Baseball savant.
