Are the skitouring functions installed by default or you need to install those? Are those exactly like for the Instinct which seems more towards mountaineering?

May I ask why you are replacing it? What are the functions that you are missing? Sorry if silly questions, but I never used any of these watches.

Main reason was the addition of music which was added to the 945. I hate running with a phone and my old mp3 player was dying.
I got a great deal on a price mistake, so jumped on the 955 Solar. They just came out with a 965 with AMOLED screen, but this is fine. Other than music, there's nothing I use on the 955 that wasn't on the 935.
Well the Afib function on the Apple Watch really does work. My dad’s watch and phone went off last night telling him he was in Afib. It startled him as he felt completely fine and this was never an issue in the past. He triggered the test a few more times and same thing. Took a ride to the ER, got treatment (shot to I guess reset the heart?) and is fine now. He never felt bad and wouldn’t have known it was happening, but his watch may have saved his life.
Trying to find a watch as a newbie is overwhelming.
Narrowed it down to Suunto peak and Garmin instinct for run/mtb/nordic/ski tour tracking and altimeter&gps functionality. Won't use training features and good battery life is important to me
Should I look at any other models?
ive been on the coros train for about 5 years now. apex and now apex 2. my main concerns were battery life (wanted something that could go over 24h). the apex models fit the bill. coros at the time was the best bang for buck by far and i still think its up there.
i like it because its simple and it works. theyve had some weird recall issues twice where my watch was fine but they said it may malfunction in future so no questions asked they sent me a new one and when i paid the small diff, upgraded the model.
downsides are less userfriendly app and no training AI (if those are downsides for you).
ive seen a couple pros testing out the new polar gps watch but dont personally have any info on it.
one note is for the most part, the activity tracking is just different data that shows up on screen. yes, coros has a ski touring feature you can switch between uphilling and going down. i never use it (extra pfaff imo) and have my mtn climb mode set up with all the data i would want. upload and change activity type is plenty good for tracking.

I have a Coros Pace 3 and i wouldn't recommend it to anyone, I hate it. It rarely knows what the fuck is going on.
For sale - if anyone wants it!
I have the Garmin Forerunner 965. IMO its the sweet spot in the lineup with all the activities you mention, great battery life, and AMOLED screen. The face is not as tough as some of the adventure focused watches so it will get scratched up, but I think thats a fair tradeoff for how much lighter and thinner it is and the lower price point.
I have the Fenix, and for MTB one of the features that sold me was you can upload a ride from Trailforks and follow it on your watch turn by turn essentially. This was huge for me as I travel a lot and riding unfamiliar trails digging my phone out every 5 minutes sucked. I charge mine every 7 days with reasonable activity levels.
Besides that as far as Garmin goes get the Sapphire screen if offered, it is not a gimmick.
I have a COROS Apex 2 Pro and I find that its elevation readings are always off. I use Strava to correct the elevation gain for an activity everytime. I had a COROS apex 1 prior and it had the same issue.
When I contacted COROS about it, they told me to clean the barometric pressure sensor, which I did. Still gives incorrect readings, no additional help/support.
I also find the heart rate monitor to be flawed. Mainly, I tie this flaw to when the watch bounces like descending on a mtb or running downhill. But it typically shows my heart rate to be the highest on descents when I know that I’m not working/breathing that hard….
I’d go with a garmin. They seem to be the leaders in this space
