It's my favorite day of the year. I love the low sun angle and short days. Here's to a safe and snowy winter for all.

Happy solstice all you pagan bastards (and bastettes)!
I'm jealous of your latitude on a day like today, Gary. I need to make it up that way during the dark time one of these years. Something about the light at northerly latitudes at this time of year is enthralling to me.
Best part of today...is tomorrow.
Kind wishes, and don’t spill the goat blood.
We celebrated with friends last night. Out on the snow in the forest, warm fire, appropriate libations.
And so the Wild Hunt begins! A safe and warm solstice to all of you!

...BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 9 PM THIS EVENING TO NOON AKST
TUESDAY NORTH OF SEWARD...
* WHAT...Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations of
1 to 3 feet expected. Winds will gust as high as 90 mph through
Portage Valley.
* WHERE...Along the Seward Highway north of Seward, including
Moose Pass, Turnagain Pass, and Portage Valley.
* WHEN...From 9 PM this evening to noon AKST Tuesday.
* IMPACTS...Travel could be nearly impossible. Widespread blowing
snow will significantly reduce visibility to whiteout
conditions. Very strong winds could cause power outages and
extensive tree damage.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Very heavy snow falling at rates of up to 2
inches per hour combined with winds of 40 to 65 mph with gusts
to 90 mph could cause whiteout conditions, making travel nearly
impossible. The snow will change over to rain by midday
Tuesday, ending the blizzard threat. The greatest snowfall
totals will be through Turnagain Pass, while storm total snow in
Moose Pass and Portage Valley before the changeover to rain
will be closer to 1 foot. Refer to the High Wind Warning for
additional details on the expected high winds.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are
expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds
and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout
conditions, making travel very hazardous. If you must travel,
have a winter survival kit with you.If you get stranded, stay
with your vehicle.

For all you pagans out there, know that Saturnalia festivals occur 12/17-23
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturnalia
And Yule is observed from today until 1/1
I have been watching them every night for a couple of weeks. SW ski. Tonight, I will get out the binoculars and see if I can see them both with moons.

Finally Winter! Happy Yule y'all!
We've been through this one, man. Solar seasons, yes.

regardless, merry Solstice.
Live views from observatories
I just now pulled on some boots, a warm jacket, and grabbed a little whiskey and went up a dark hill across from my place. I looked at the conjunction, the Pleiades, Orion peeking up over the Sangres in the east, Cassiopeia, and neighbors’ Christmas lights. Even heard some coyotes. It all made me feel very nice.
Happy solstice!
I went out to do the same except a storm is coming through. Forecast is 3-7” at 20*
I guess I can wait until tomorrow to view the conjunction junction...
To be honest my friend, you have to go a lot further north IMHO. We're really not that much further north than Edmonton...Anyway, I really start seeing the big difference when you get to Dease Lake and north (8hrs + north of us). But hey, this place is worth a trip anyway.
