I guess when I broke my two ribs last season I could have persued litigation, but then again, I'm not that kind of person seeking to financially wreck a community resource.

Gondola didn't load until about 9:45 am. Was blowing pretty good up top and big wet flakes at the River Run base. Got lucky with the rope drop into the bowls.
Snow was on the heavy side. Very familiar feel to the Cascade concrete but not quite concrete.

Not many people about the first hour or so.

Today was way better than I thought it was going to be. Yes the snow was heavy but we have all seen way worse. And another shot tonight.

That delay seemed unnecessary but my guess is it's because there was a fatality yesterday on the mountain. I'm hearing suffocation but that's not official and could be way wrong.

^^^ I was on a chair with someone who was on scene, and he said it was an elderly man and that it was snow immersion. He performed CPR until Patrol showed up a few minutes later. I did not want to post anything on it yesterday out of respect for the family. The person I rode the chair with was clearly shaken and having a hard time processing. I offered to stay with him, but he mentioned that he had two ski buddies waiting for him at the top of the lift.

I feel like SV has more suffocation fatalities than most resorts. There have been a few over the last few years. Guy seemed like a pillar in the community. RIP.

The sun finally showed up to the namesake ski resort in the Wood River Valley.

Caught the rope drop into the bowls.

I don't know much about ski racing. Im told the course is rather short for men at about 1:20 and rather long for women. They will ski the same course.

Well damn, wasted a ton of effort yesterday. Hopefully all is well for the Super-G today.

How did the World Cup event go overall? I think it's cool for the US to get events like this, but I fear we might be getting fewer of them in the future due to the political climate, especially in a sport dominated by European countries.

How did it go overall? Short version--very well I think.Effort by the Sun Valley company, paid mountain staff, and and army of volunteers was outstanding. I am told by insiders that FIS was very happy and that the racers were very happy with the race courses.

The big bummer of course was the Downhill did not happen. It snowed 2 days before and they cleared the course. Then it snowed again and then the wind came up and blew about 60 plus and they just could not do it. Super G went great. It got warm for the GS and the course rutted up some, but the best skiers were on the podium. Same for Slalom.

The deal is you get it 3 times in 5 years, IF both parties agree. I have not heard anyone suggest it will not be back again in 2 years.
I personally found it both exciting and a big pain in the ass. Seeing those guys and gals training up close was astonishing. It is just a whole different level of skiing.

I guess it was a good time for all. Pass holders w 1/3 of the mountain off limits for ~3 months prob took the biggest hit, which is not a big deal except on powder days. As per SVCo usual lax comms - no update on when the remaining closed areas will reopen. It brought probably the worst group of tourist skiers all year, but it was fun being on the hill w the worlds best skiers, and others just a notch below that.

Locals were very supportive of the races/racers including 100 side slippers that worked all Friday night, 3/21, under the portable spot lights trying to pack down 3" of hot schmoo to get ready for the DH which was eventually canceled anyway. No DH was crushing. Locals were there in droves at the finish line and on the course sidelines as allowed. Reportedly MS got pumped by the crowd for the 2nd run and went for it. The layout is not spectator friendly. Im pretty sure the towns vibe was good throughout. A couple good bands downtown brought the place back to life as its normally a ghost town w old fuks such as myself normally hiding out at home.

Racers loved the feel of the area, which is mostly undeveloped and the DH/SG course is among the steepest, if not the steepest on the WC tour. The DH course was relatively short esp for the men, but as per video above it looked like fun. The snow/Wx could have been better, but global warming. SVCo dumped millions into safety, snowmaking, run changes, new lifts (quad and a 6 pack), labor, and a huge effort. It was 1000% better course than last years Nor-ams. There were 2 helicopters and a fixed wing in place for med evacs.

Its incredible how much time, money, and effort is required to stage technical and speed events during the same week. It was a big ask and I think SVCo deserves all the credit for making it happen. Of course they will also reap the spoils in years to come. We are being led to believe the WC Finals will be back in 2027.

Visited end of Feb/ early march and it was crazy to see how much work was going into the build. Was a little bit of a bummer to have a chunk of the warm springs closed during my visit but whatever. Had everything from some soft now found in the trees, to slush bumps and ripping fast groomers. Cool mountain you got there. Enjoyed watching what I could on tv/ replays.

Ah, gotta love all the Washington (Seattle) tourists that come to Sun Valley and complain about it. That's been the biggest group of douchebags (not to mention their children) I've ever run into at Sun Valley. The rest of the locals have been nothing but good, but then again, I live in Idaho.
A friend of mine and his brother were some of the sideslippers scraping snow off the course on Friday night. Sounds like a hell of a lot of work went into that. He got some great shots of Mikaela looking right at him. She knew he was sneaking a peek.
